View Full Version : Really stupid question about the waterparks
I'm very suceptable to sunburn on my shoulders and back and was wondering would I look an idiot wearing a T shirt whilst going on the waterslides and such in Typhoon Lagoon/Blizzard Beach (have not decided which one we are going to yet). Sorry for the stupid question but it's been bothering me a bit. Does anyone in these parks wear T shirts whilst in the water? [msnembarrased]
Dave,
not in the slightest, last time i went to typhoon + blizzard i wore the loudest hawaiin shirt i could find. Nobody batted an eyelid, as it turned out not to be the loudest!

Dave
It's fine to cover up in the water parks, me and my children sometimes wear t shirts in the water to keep the sun off our shoulders. I love lying in a ring and floating around the lazy river so like to be extra careful I don't burn.

Yep - me to - I wear a shirt in the waterparks too - very fair skin and burn easily.
Dave you can also buy some really really high factor sun creams at places like Wal-mart etc... There are some sports ones that don't come off in water.
We always wait until all the family has a good base tan before we go to any water parks, and always use lots and lots of sun-cream.
I agree Rose a T-shirt looks much better than burnt shoulders[msnwink]
Last time we were there in July - loads of people were wearing t-shirts. If you find they slow you down on the slides just take them off for the descent and then pop them back on again. Try not to go to the water parks at the beginning of the trip - it's a long, very hot day! Something else you might want to consider, depending on when you're travelling is some kind of footwear - the concrete paths get burning hot. We never bother and look like a bunch of gumbies trying to hop, skip and jump across the scorching ground!! [:P]
Have a great time!

Thanks a million for all the replies. I did order a surfing shirt (waterproof) but it was really tight and I didn't like it. You can also buy UV protection T shirts which is what I'll probably buy.
Hair on my shoulders and back maybe as much of a reason for the T shirt to be honest [msnembarrased]
you can get fantastic quality spf 50+ t.shirts and swimwear from here

well worth a look for children and adults

First rule of a Forum such as this one
"There is no such thing as a stupid question"
dave we just got back from there and lots of people wear t shirts to hide their bits, when you get out there and see the shapes sizes and looks of your fellow fun makers you wont be feeling self conscious one bit - trust me[msnwink].
the other thing is that depending on time of year it often showers in the pm, so its a good reason to arrive early have your sun fun then move on later.
the water parks can get so busy that they stop entry so try to arrive at opening get some beds, shade area or parasol or what ever. you ll get the hang of it after a few visits.
dont forget to buy the $10 refill mug(free drinks all day then)and take it back the next visit and just ask for a $6 sticker to get free drinks that day.
they never mention this when you buy the mug, but even so its a nice memento for the kids for $4.
we often forget to take last years back and usually end up with 2 new ones anyway to stop any diet coke/sprite arguements[msnsmile2]

Dave,
My family and I spent a month out there, and we all wore t shirts at the waterparks, as did many other people. I you going to Typhoon Lagoon, consider some water shoes, as the floor in the wave pool is fairly rough and can cause small cuts on your feet after getting hit by an almighty wave.
Enjoy it it's great

We tend to wear football shirts as these dry very quickly and are light when wet.

Its not just your feet in the wave pool,
but your elbows & knees if you don't keep your wits about you [msnwink]
FANTASTIC fun though [msnsmile2]

Just sounds like you are normally very safe in the sun to me:) No harm in that Dave[msnwink] I am pretty ok in the sun I have to admit, that being said, we rarely spend a whole day in a waterpark until we are half way through our trip, so building up the tan and resistance to burning a bit before hand. It has helped!! And of course, keep applying the sun cream[msnwink]
Would'nt even think of not having a tee shirt handy when there
Only time I did'nt got burnt to a crisp!!!
Once bitten twice shy as they say
Another thing to consider, if you haven't decided which water park, is that with the theming in Blizzard Beach there are a LOT of white surfaces. This is highly reflective and when we went to it in late January one time, I was surprised at how pink my shoulders got even though it didn't feel that hot on the day.

Don't forget the cream on the top of your ears and the back of your neck and for those a little thin on top a bit of cream on top is a good idea

That is an option but personally I hate to see british footie shirts in Florida. Makes me feel like I am in Benidorm. Just my opinion though so please don't take offence.

We used P20 for the first time this trip for the children and it was absolutely fantastic. You only need to apply it once a day even if you are constantly in and out of the water. Hubby and I used high factor suncream (to use up our stock), reapplied it appropriately and still got a bit caught on our shoulders. After that I ditched the conventional stuff and switched to P20 too. I would definitely reccomend it.
On a slightly different note - take care if you go to Discovery Cove as you can get friction burns on your shoulders from the wet suits, that look similar to sunburn. The 'fish friendly' suncream that they provide wasn't too effective for us either.

Tons of people wear shirts in the water - there is no such thing as a safe tan -protect yourself!
With the sights you see there, anything goes, trust me!
As for the hair - get to a local Nail Salon, have a pedicure, manicure and wax -I see loads of men going into the one near Publix [on 192 just near I27] and sat next to a Reverend once, who had come to do a wedding, but had feet and nails done once a week in his home town also!!

Me and the boys use P20, only need to apply ones a day. But we still apply high factor suncream. Jere is always ok as he spends most of the summer outside (BUILDER).
I have black/brown hair and dark brown eyes with olive toned skin but I always wear factor 50+, sunglasses and a hat. Believe me there is no such thing as a safe tan, I've just had my 19th operation after being diagnosed with MM...and I never burned.
You can still have fun in the sun, just cover up[msnwink]

We bought a great sunscreen in Walmart that you spray (aerosol type spray) on and does not need to br rubbed in. Really easy to do 3 children and 2 adults in a couple of mins. As it was so quick the children didn't moan. The only thing you have to be careful of is that if you get any on the top of socks or on t-shirts (particularly white) it does mark. Small price to pay for being well sunscreened up[msnwink]

My sons and husband also wear tee shirts at the water parks.
The stay dry type used under wetsuits are OK, but as you say are quite tight. We prefer to use the type that you can buy in outdoor/camping/walking shops, as they are quick dry and light when wet as they dont soak up the water like cotton T's and offer a more "relaxed fit"
Have fun!
Thank you so much for all the replies. Mizzy thanks for the link to www.lioninthesun.co.uk. I had actually bought a swim shirt (or surf shirt) from another on-line reatiler but it was very tight and I hated it.
We are going to Typhoon lagoon as we will have my son and his cousin with us and I hear it's better for the kids.
I feel a lot better now knowing that I won't look out of place. Thanks again to all of you.
On a last note Susan J as for the waxing... once bitten twice shy. No way am ever doing that again [:O]
Thanks for the tips on the drinks. Will bear that in mind..

Another tip for the water parks, try to wear flip flops or rubber shoes as much as possible, we always get sore big toes (we have spotted loads of people at the end of the day limping or examing their toes!):)

You'll look much more of an idiot if you're walking round sporting severe sunburn for the rest of your holiday. It's the lobsters who really stand out. Slip, slap, slop!!
