We are flying into Sanford for the first time on 10th June (can't wait[clap]) and was wondering if (and if so where) they have ATM machines at the airport? I'm sure they must but I wanted to confirm as I was planning to not change up any dollars in the UK and just withdraw the cash with my Nationwide Cash card when I land.

I notice there are a few fans of Nationwide accounts and credit cards on this forum, as they don't charge for withdrawals (cash card) or commission(both cash and credit) and so you get a much better rate doing this rather than 'buying' dollars at home.

I don't know if there is an ATM machine but I would be wary of relying on it totally. I don't know if the US ones are more reliable than the ones in the UK but there seems to be a law that says they are only out of order when you desperately need the cash. It might be as well to change just a small amount of money to ensure that you have enough for the toll road. The difference in exchange rates would not cost that much for the peace of mind of knowing you have some ready cash.

Make sure you tell your card company that you are off to the US. A lot of companies are improving their security and they may stop your card if they don't know you are going

I agree with Lynne and would take some dollars with you.

I'm sure I've seen ATMs at Sanford, but I wouldn't rely on them a) being there or b) working when you want them to.
I would certainly take a few dollars to be on the safe side!
If the ATMs don't work, the first problem you might face is toll booths if you go down the 417 from Sanford (unless you go over to the I - 4 of course) [msnsmile2]
I take credit cards and US debit cards with me but still like to have some greenback $s for immediate expenses.

Thanks for the advice. Guess I ought to nip in to the Post Office and get a few $s if only for the tolls.

I keep meaning (but forgetting) to inform the Credit Card company before going on hols, but it is a good tip so thanks for the reminder on that too.

I would be a little careful about using an ATM at Sanford. We used a phone there and it cost us a bomb just to make a connection. You may not be charged by your card company to withdraw but I bet Sanford Airport make a charge.[msnscared]

Sorry to hijack your post but I was wondering. Can you use ATMs in orlando anyway? I was there in 2004 and I remember trying my bank card in the ATM that was in our hotel, it was totally different from our ones and I was that confused and gave up. I remember notifying my bank (before we went) that I may use my card to withdraw some money if I needed it so I know that it should've worked but I couldnt figure it out!!

Depends on when you buy $ at home.

I agree with Paul, I always buy Travellers cheques, then if the $ is on the up I use my Nationwide Credit card whilst there, and save my travellers cheques for the next visit, if the $ is on the down I use my travellers cheques. Either way I would never want to arrive with no local money.

Quite true Paul, but as it is a last minute booking and don't play the money markets I'll wager at this late stage I'll get a better tourist rate this way. Certainly I'm willing to take the risk on the rate changes between now and then and anyway I use my Credit Card rather than cash the majority of the time. Cash is only for tolls and tipping most of the time for me, so I thought if there was a cash machine at Sanford I'd save the hassle of buying $s at home. I tend to do this in Europe, but as I go there more often I always have some lose change in Euros lying about to start me off.

Hi Lyn. Never liked Travellers Cheques even when they were the best way to take money abroad. These days with it being so easy (normally) to withdraw cash from ATMs all over the world I don't even consider them anymore, especially as I use the Credit Card for most things and pay it off when I get home. TCs may work for you better with dollars though, especially if you are a regular visitor to the US. It's been 5 years since we were there last.

I will take your (and others) advice though and go get a few dollars to take with me. You never know, if I look hard enough I might find some dollars around the house that I brought back from our last visit. [msnwink]

You don't need to inform Nationwide about using your debit card abroad but you do for the credit card.

I found the atm's very easy to use but they are slightly different as the card does not stay in slot for the whole of transaction. You take it out and then answer all the prompts on the machine. I'm sure I read somewhere that the machine informs you if there was a charge for using it you were given the opportunity of cancelling the transaction.

Before we went in March I asked for advice on which machines I could use with my Nationwide card and where they were situated. I was given a link to use and if you know the zip code for Sandford airport that might help. We looked for one at Orlando Int. without success but it is a larger airport. On our return we found one near our departure gate but as you are now "quaranteened" through to the train on arrival that one cannot be used.

Go to either

http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/jsp/SearchPage.jsp

or

http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/cardholderservices/atmlocations/index.html

depending on which logo is on your Nationwide card.

Rob - have you thought about ordering dollars from Travelex and then picking them up at the airport? They usually give a good exchange rate. Like you we always use credit cards and cash points in we need to. But would always advise and having a few dollars to get us through the 1st 24 hours.

Diane.

Thanks for those last 3 posts. I have taken something from each of them. I now know Sanford don't have an ATM (a VISA one that I can use anyway) thans to Blott's links. I also got a good rate on currency through Travelex, so thanks Diane - just have to remember to pick it up up the airport!
