Anyone live in or know York well? Just after picking your brains about a few things?
We live in Harrogate very near to York.
Visited a few times, stayed on the campsite at rowntree park if it's any help. highly recommend absolutley gorgeous pork rolls in a street in the shambles.
We used to live on Yorkshire and visted York a few times with the kids - depends what you want to know really [msntongue]
CDV,
I lived near to, and worked in York many years ago. If I can help I will but it would help if we knew the questions???[confused]
I am originally from Hull and worked in York for a while - what's the question?

Ok I will tell you why I am asking. I am moving there in the Spring. One last contract before the move to the USA! I just want to get a feel for the place as I have never been before. My parents love it. I have stayed in Harrogate in the past. Is York expensive? What are the best areas to live in? Any special little finds I should know about? It's under two hours to my parents house, so that will please them seeing me more often. Plus I get to catch up with a lot more people I have met on here:D

York's lovely CDV, not too far away from me - I'm sure you'll enjoy living there (almost as much as you'll enjoy the USA [msnwink])
About 20 years ago I used to spend most weekends there with a friend but I only go occasionally now so can't be much help to you - but I'm sure there'll be others who can pass on lots of tips :)

One sister lives in Haxby, my brother in Pocklington and my other sister has a house in Acklington and a flat in York itself. They are all nice areas, and with the housing market being the way it is they are all now rather pricey.I personally love all the little villages that are dotted around.Thixendale, Burythorpe, Birdsdale and Acklam. But I suppose it depends if you want to have a 30/40 minute drive or not into York centre.

Looking forward to the racing, get a chance to wear my shoes and hats a bit more!
CDV I work with lots of people who live in York so will ask them all your questions when I get back from Florida. I do know that it is a lovely place with lots to see and a small but thriving city centre. As with all cities there are good and bad places to stay, which are either cheap or expensive. I am not a city person so can't understand why you would rather stay in York than Harrogate. I know nice house that is up for rent at this very moment in Harrogate.;)

Travel Lynne. I need to be beside where I am working so do not wany to commute. I have been offered somewhere near Fulford Road and I think that is near the city centre?
Fulford is not a bad area and has a very good golf course. There is a direct link by train 25 minutes from H - Y

Hi CDV
I live in York; moved here 6 years ago. It's a great place. With my job, I travel the length and breadth of the country and York is a great base. Train 2hrs from London, A1 and M1 about 15 mins drive. I could choose to live anywhere (my office is in Canary Wharf, but I don't need to be there that often), but after years of looking about, I haven't found anywhere else I'd rather be.
You'll have to put up with awful traffic at times, mind you. Not very car friendly. the City itself is really attractive and if you are looking at Fulford you'll be right beside the Designer Outlet Mall, where my wife spends all my money.
It's certainly far from the cheapest place to buy a house - but the price reflects the desirability of the area.
Anything you would like to know, just ask.

Tonish, great to hear all this information, I will be back to pick your brian at a later date. I really am quite excited about it all, especially the possibility of living next door to a designer shopping outlet[clap][clap].
CDV, I was born in Harrogate and lived there for 20 years so travelled through to York often, and even worked there for a couple of years. I would agree that you would be better living near the centre if you are working there, because unless the traffic system has improved vastly since I lived around there , it was a minor nightmare commuting especially if you had to go through the city to get to work.(I believe there's a good ring road now which must help a lot).
I was forever late for work when travelling from Harrogate to York as I worked right in the centre. [msnsad]
Countryside (and pubs!) are brilliant around York. You'll love it!![clap]
I used to love living in Yorkshire - great landscape and great people.
Number 2 son was born there, although we left when he was a year old. He wants to go bakc and vist to see what his homeland is like :D so may see you when we are on the great tour next year [msnsmile2]

I lived in Richmond 20 years back and Andy lived in Thirsk for a while in the 70s so looking forward to coming back to that neck of the woods!
Most areas in York are lovely - especially the outlying villages. I personally love Stamford Bridge.
However, if you are working in the City Centre the traffic is generally really awful at peak times getting in from and out to the villages like most places I guess) York has great train links and fantastic shopping [msnsmile2]
