It was enivitable it would end this way:(. I won't say anything more than that.........

Strange though it may appear I was wondering what Alex and Angie will be feeling at the minute. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

My best wishes, my prayers go to the family of George Best
To George, to me you will always be remembered as "The Flawed Genius "

George Best was always ready with this self-deprecating put-down when questioned on his lifestyle.

"I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted," one of his many famous remarks

My best remembered quote
"I was born with a great gift, and sometimes with that comes a destructive streak. Just as I wanted to outdo everyone when I played, I had to outdo everyone when we were out on the town"

Peace at last.

Sad end for poor George:(

Another quote of his - ''I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered'' :)

Saw it on BBC World News this morning. Very sad.
Saw Bestie live at Stamford Bridge and Loftus Road as a kid in the 70s. He was a true hero to us.

I too was lucky enough to see George Best play in his heyday - something I'll never forget.

I grew up in East Belfast. Went to the same primary and secondary school as George. My wife lived a few hundred yards from his home.

He has been my hero from I was about 6 years old. We're really down about this. Yes, we all knew it was coming, but the world feels a poorer place without him.

Hi
Well as a life long Manchester United supporter the best player I have ever seen in the world was George. He was a fantastic player but yet like all men & women he had "feet of clay" he was not a god but a human being. His faults were broadcast to the world by the press, not like the rest of us who make many mistakes that very few people know about (thank goodness) !
I met george on a train shortly after watching him play against Wales and although he was tired he still had time to sign his autograph for me and talk a while. He was a gentleman.
Alcohol addiction is very hard to break and it will kill you and break your loveones hearts.
Everybody presumes that when thy drink they will never reach addiction.
I will not cast the first stone at George. There for the grace of God go I.
I feel so sorry for his family and friends, and I will remember the hours of pleasure that wonderful Irishman gave me.

Like many another Man United household we are in mourning tonight for George Best , the world will never see his equal again on the soccer fields. Our thoughts are with his family , his son , his Dad and his sisters in their grief. Who knows maybe his passing will save someone else out there who needs help with a drinking problem , I think George would appreciate that . May he rest in peace.

My thoughts are with his family, I know what it is like to watch a loved one drink themselves to death. I lost one of my brothers 14 years ago aged 36. It was awful to watch someone turn from a smart, clever, good looking and popular person to a drunk who wouldn't accept any help, at the end it was a relief. Just glad that my Mum and Dad were not around to see it happen. Maybe thats why I don't drink, not only do I not like the taste I have seen what the demon drink can do.

He was such a talented footballer and a joy to watch. People seem to forget that alcholoism is a disease we have not found a cure for and I hope he is remembered for his football rather than his illness.

I agree, the alcholism is what changed him, he was not a bad person, even both his wives said they still loved him and that speaks volumes.

He was married three times was he not, Angie, Alex and Mary Stavin?
Interesting to see the change in him over the years.

No according to the press he was only married twice to Angie and Alex.

He went out with Mary Stavin. There was much hype at the time because she was Miss World. He didn't get married to her.
I used to go to Old Trafford to watch when he was playing. The crowd used to lean forward, (no seating then) and hold their breath whenever he got the ball.

Right, apparently he had a softness for Miss Worlds. I vaguely remember seeing him on the TV when I was wee with a beautiful blonde and she was a Miss World, I now know it to be Mary Stavin!

This link is quite interesting if you are a bit young to remember as I am.

My son who is too young to remember George Best as a player (he's 16) is a big Man Utd supporter and has footage of George playing for Utd on a DVD. He was most upset yesterday by the lack of respect by certain football fans.
