Hi all. Has anyone ever been to a Baseball game in Florida before?
We will be flying to Orlando on the 22nd of July for a fortnight, and in that time I'd love to take my son to a Baseball game. Does anyone know where I'd get information on game dates/ticket prices?
Any help would be much appreciated,
Adam.
Hi Adam, we're heading out at about the same time and are hoping to catch a game.
We were thinking of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They're playing a few games during the time you're there and it should only take about an hour to get to St Petersburg (tropicana stadium) from Orlando. Check out the Devil Rays website for details and you can buy tickets online there too. I've not posted the address as links sometimes don't show up.
They play the Boston Red Sox on the 25th 26th and 27th July
Hope that helps,
Pete

Thanks for the help Peter.
Just been over to the website and the 25th is looking good. Do you think we would be able to purchase the tickets on the actual day of the game, or a few days before when we arrive in the US? I'd much prefer to buy the tickets in person than over the net.
Hi Adam
We went to Disney Wide World of Sports Complex to watch some baseball,we were quite fortunate to spot that there was a game that evening and being nosy thought we would go and check it out, wasn't major league, it was to one below. Managed to understand the game and how they scored by the finish but very entertaining especially the Referee.
STTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTRIKE
Check out the Web Site just type Disney Wide World of Sport into your search engine
Just having a quick look myself you may be in look
Cheers

Just been on the website on July 31st there is the 2005 USSSA Baseball Elite World Series.
Is this the kind of thing you went to see Fraser?
Hi Adam
I beleive so, Orlando used to play their home games at the Disney resort.
Orlando arn't a major league team but I beleive these guys are the next tier down.
Had a fantastic evening, the crowds a completly different from what you get in the UK.
Quite funny really and yes you start acting like them also.
Well worth a visit to watch as like you and your son we were intrigued to see what it was like.

Thanks for the info Fraser, the ticket prices look very reasonable so we'll certainly be paying a visit to the sports complex.

Have fun
I think you can pay on the door but may be worth pre booking just incase.
Enjoy the game
Cheers
Fraser
Hi Simpson Fan,
My husband went to his first game last year at the Disney complex with my son and grandson, had to have his hotdog, coke and popcorn, went to the loo and missed the only home run of the game. He was so upset, unfortunately we all just laughed....[sporty]

If you want to see an MLB game which is the top level, then Tampa Bay Devil Rays are the closest to see. We've been twice to watch them while on holiday in Orlando, we booked tickets in advance via their website and picked them up on the day - no problems at all. We managed to see them play the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
The staff at Tropicana Fields are very friendly and helpful, I would also say that you'd probably be able to buy tickets on the day as they very rarely sell out.
I'm not sure who would have been playing at Disney, it could have been Spring Training (equivelent to our footy pre-season games).
Hi Simpsons fan,
Already ordered my tickets, going to see the Devil Rays play the Forida Marlins (2003 world series champions) on the 26th June. If you go to their website tickets are readily available, as Josie Jump says you just turn up on the day to collect them. Had no problem when I collected mine for Yankee Stadium last year.
The Orlando Rays minor league team moved their franchise to Montgomery, Alabama for the 2005 season, so the nearest minor league team is in Lakeland, the Lakeland Tigers. Tickets for that are only $5 for adults and $4 for kids. Wednesdays it's popcorn, hotdogs etc for a dollar, and Thursdays it's beer & soda for a dollar [drinkbeer][drinkpepsi]

Maybe we should head down to see the RED SOX as the only way you can get a ticket to see them in Boston is through a scalper as they have been sold out for months.

Hi Flash. I've just been on minorleaguebaseball.com which has the schedule for all of the Lakeland Tigers games.
Ideally, I would like to take my son to a Major League Baseball game, but as we don't really know that much about the sport,it may make more sense to take him to see the Lakeland Tigers which is very inexpensive.

I've been to both Major and Minor games. Belive me, the minor games are more fun. First of all they're cheaper! The stadiums are usually smaller, and more friendly. Concessions are cheaper. And the general atmosphere is friendly and fun.
Its like a Premier football game vs seeing a Brentford game.

Hi Kay,
I was browsing MLB the other night, and the Red Sox (as well as lots of other teams) have a thing called Red Sox Replay, where season ticket holders can resell the tickets they can't use through the club. You can buy them at face value, admittedly there were only tickets for the current Orioles series when I was looking a couple of nights ago. Other clubs seem to have it better organised, take a look at ticketXchange at the Astros, Dodgers & Angels sites. Pretty cool I thought, just the thing for someone from out of town wanting to take in a ball game while visiting.
Unfortunatly the Yankees haven't caught on to this one yet [msnsad]
Did I say face value [msnscared] I would have thought the club would frown on profiteering, a season ticket holder selling 4 front row tickets, face value $260, he is looking for $1000 [msnmad]
Hi - you can travel to Tampa to see the closest major league baseball. If you plan properly you will see 2 games in one day !
Otherwise, at Disney World wide Sports complex you can see loads of sports including minor league baseball - home of the Orlando Rays - rather like going to see 2nd division soccer in the uk - done with a bit of razz!
Good fun for the family - even for the non sporty members of the family - tickets available on the gate or at any disney complex!
Enjoy !
Can someone explain why they dress like they do for baseball? Fashions change in many sports but this looks like its stuck in the 1930s. Tks
If I've looked up the schedule correctly, I've also just seen the New York Yankees are playing. Are these worth going to see? Tks
Hi Adam,
I can't help you with the info, but as you see lots of other people have. I just wanted to tell you that my daughter phoned me tonight after going to see her first baseball game,(she is working in Jacksonville), and she said it was awesome. Loads of fun things in between 'batters'? and it lasts a good 2 hours or more. She went to see a minor league for $5.00 entry and loved it, she is 22 by the way, but still a little girl at heart. She also found the bar, $1.00 for a bottle of beer, but I am sure you don't want to know about that part, being with the children and all that. She said everyone was so friendly around where they were seated, and it was a lovely experience. I hope you enjoy watching your game, and I know we are putting it on our list of to do's in July.
Think like this sounds like a great idea for my 12 year old sports mad nephew when we go in August. Will there be games on then? Might it be suitable for other members of the family who are not so sports crazy? (like me!) [msnwink]
Dawn
This is a link to the site I found. As you can read from my previous posts I know nothing about baseball!!! However this might help. Ticket prices seem reasonable. http://tampabay.devilrays.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=tb&m=8&y=2005

I am a baseball nut, but I have only ever been to one professional game, what a day! (Red Sox @ Yankess 04/2004) Everything is aimed at the fans, families are welcome, there are games and quizzes between innings.
We will be off to see the Devil Rays on 26/6, there are always regular promotions to attract fans and families. On the day we go the first 5000 kids get a free autographed baseball. We have seats right behind home plate, and although it was $200 for 4 seats, I reckon that because we wont be there again for a few years it is worth every penny.
