On the West Side of Pleasure island opposite the Adventurers Club lies the Comedy Warehouse. The club has between five and seven shows an evening depending on the season and seats fifteen minutes before each show. As this club is one of two which admit under 21s (with an adult/parent) it raises questions from parents, comedy fans and casual visitors.
What does the show entail?
Each show lasts about 35-45 minutes and is an improvisational show with a cast of six in which the performers use suggestions from the audience to create comic sketches and songs. As a result no two shows are ever the same and it is perfectly feasible to visit the warehouse on two or three occasions over the course of an evening at Pleasure Island. The setting is like that of small theatre with a tiny stage, with music provided from a keyboard just underneath.
Is it Suitable for Children?
Early in the evening (first two or so shows) there will be no risqué material at all. After about 11 the performers allow themselves a little more free reign. Usually the only rum material will come from audience suggestions (and be subsequently squashed) rather than from the performers.
What is the Refreshment Situation?
The Comedy Warehouse is a table service club. You are discouraged from going to the bar. Popcorn is the snack of choice and there is a full range of drinks, including signature cocktails. Do not feel obliged to have a drink if you do not wish to pay the rather inflated prices.
I have never seen an Improv Show Before. Should I Go?
Absolutely. New experiences are good. You are on vacation. Enjoy.
I am Familiar with Improv. Should I go?
Very much so. The Warehouse is pretty much the same as most improv clubs going and you won’t see much new material; however there are some VERY good performers there if you see the right show. The setting itself also makes the club stand out: the room is decked out in Disneyana from times past and is a real eye-catcher.
Are there some Bad Shows?
Sadly the nature of improve means that yes, there will inevitably be some bad shows. The quality of performers at the warehouse has varied quite a bit over the last few years, but some of the longer servers are outstanding (including both musicians). I would recommend seeing at least two shows to see the variety that is out there.
As someone who has done quite a bit of improv in my time I always find the Comedy Warehouse worth a visit each time I come to Disney World. It is certainly a great family option early in the evening and with the new Pleasure Island entry options can be combined nicely with a day in Downtown or an evening meal at West Side.
