Key West Narrated Trolley Bus Tour

For our visit to Key West a few years ago my Father did a lot of the planning. We stayed at Fort Lauderdale for a night before going on our journey down the Keys. Because it appeared to be a long drive we decided to stay overnight half way down the Keys. In hindsight as we had two drivers in the car this was not really necessary we could have completed the journey in one day.

Before leaving the UK My Father had searched the internet for details of any trolley bus tours in Key West as we always find this is a good way to get to know a new location. He found one and did the booking online from England at a cost of about £20 per adult for a one day ticket.

Included in this cost for a narrated tour was all taxes, gratuities were optional. He received a confirmation of his booking immediately. We did not require it but the tour was wheelchair accessible at the Key West Welcome Center and Mallory Square.

The tour runs between 9. 00am and 4. 30pm and departed every 30 minutes. We walked to Mallory Square to get ours but you could also get on at any of the following stops:

Bahama Village Market Place

Key West Welcome Center - Wheelchair Accessible

Casa Marina

Southernmost Trolley Stop

We boarded and sat back while your our tour guide recounted the history of the days of Indians, pirates, wreckers and the Civil War. It was a great way to explore Key West.

As we hopped on and off the trolley bus three times we had three different guides all of who were really good. We liked the fact that we could take the tour at our own pace by getting on and off as we wished with no restrictions made on the length of our stop off.

We learnt all about Key West' s lucrative ship wrecking industry. We heard great stories of the successes and disasters of Henry Flagler' s railroad. We were also told about the fierce Calusa Indians that were said to leave the remains of their enemies on the beaches of Key West, thus creating Key West' s first name, Cayo Hueso. . . Island of Bones, that was spooky!

This tour was relatively expensive as trolley bus tours go but it was very comprehensive with many places of interest highlighted so we felt it really was worth the money.
