HILLSBOROUGH RIVER STATE PARK

Hillsborough River State Park is situated in Thonotasassa, on the U. S. Highway 301, 6 miles south of Zephyrhills and 9 miles north of Tampa. It is one of the earlier Stae Parks and was largely worked on between 1935 and 1938.

This park is composed of hammock, fllodplain, flat woods and grass pond and covers almost 3, 400 acres, two thirds wet land and one third upland. It is one of those parks where you do not know what to do first; there is a re created seminole fort to explore, or cooling down in the swimming hole; you could rent a canoe, fish or explore one (or more) of the nature trails.

The fort was constructed way back in 1936 and there are guided tours on saturdays and sundays (one tour each day)This was correct at the time of writing, but always best to check the facts for yourselves You need to turn up a quarter of an hour before the tour start time. The visitors centre has some artefacts which reflect this time also, so make some time to walk round before you go.

There are 7 miles of trails to explore, pick up a leaflet from the ranger station to make the most of these. If you only have time to do one trail, then make it the Rapids Nature Trail. This leads you to the Hillsborough River Rapids through oak hammocks. There are 3 other trails to walk as well and if you have the time, I heartily recommend that you do so.

Canoes are available to rent at $10 an hour; these are provided by the parks concessionaires who also sell snacks. Hillsborough river is fast flowing and divides the park in two.

There is a man made swimming hole here which is available to bathe in during the warmer months. It costs $2 per person and there is a cafe in the area.

Anglers are likely to catch cat fish, bass and bream in the Hillsborough River and you will need a license. There is a picnic area provided with a playground and there is another playground near the swimming pool. A promis to visit a playground is always a great incentive if you have a reluctant child.

Nearby State Parks include Lake Louisa, Dade Battlefield and Alafia River. Your ranger will advise you on a park to suit your family.
