If you are ever on the Gulf Coast it is well worth spending a day in Venice. Last time we went we were traveling from Orlando down to Naples and we broke our journey there.
For those in the party that like to relax in the sun head to the beach. You can get there from Main Street it is only about four blocks and you stroll down a beautiful tree lined boulevard. It is surrounded by huge trees with Spanish Moss and at certain times of the year you can see parrots in the trees. There are picnic areas, beach volleyball, and lifeguards on duty during the day.
If you want to stroll, shop or just browse head for Main Street. Here you will find small shops, restaurants and a park. Although you will find the usual shops with tourist trinkets there are also art stores, clothing stores (with everything from beachwear to eveningwear), specialty shops and some lovely sidewalk cafes. The Florida “season” is January to April and at this time the shops open in the evening. Younger children will like the park which has a water feature they can run through to cool themselves down.
The Boardwalk extends for about a mile and is a lovely walk alongside the beach looking out at the ocean.
At the North and South Jetty Parks you can sit back and watch the boats going in and out of the inlet. It is a great place to watch the sun go down and you can also fish there. Snacks are also available.
Although there is a small admission charge the Venice Pier next to Sharkey’s restaurant is another place to visit and stroll along.
If you are interested in the history of Venice park your car next to the city’s library. The historic district is surrounded by waterways and fabulous Italian architecture all dating back to the original city plans of 1925. You will see lovely gift shops as well as inexpensive antique shops and several restaurants. Take time to visit the Triangle Inn which has the local historic museum on its first floor. Entrance is free and opens Mondays and Wednesdays from 10. 00am until 4. 00pm.
Venice also has warm mineral springs. There is a picnic area, facility rooms (massage, homeopathic doctor, etc) and a café. It is said that the water is lukewarm and can provide relief for many ailments, including skin conditions, stress, pain, muscular problems, and arthritis. My Mother has been saying she must go to try them but has yet to do so.
If you get time do try to explore Venice.
