Dunedin: An overview - Part 6

Shopping and Entertainment:-

ID Fashion Week has put Dunedin on New Zealand’s fashion map. This one week festival is dedicated to all things fashion. It happens annually in the end of February when local designers show the international circuit what they can do.

Dunedin’s fashion district can be found mainly on George Street with Plume being the must go place. Plume stocks international designers, Tanya Carlson, also on George Street, links sophistication with edgy fashion in her label. Dada Manifesto mixes New Zealand labels with their own Dada Vintage Range; they are a block south of the Octagon in Upper Moray Place. Moray Chambers houses the city’s contemporary jewellers who work with gold, enamel and semi-precious gemstones.

The fringe town of Port Chalmers houses some excellent art galleries including 34th gallery, Anchorage Galley and Milnes Court Gallery. You can stroll down Port Chalmers own George Street for local artists or stay in Dunedin and look in the Milford Galleries in the city’s Dowling Street.

New Zealand is synonymous with sheepskin and Dunedin’s best sheepskin and leather goods are to be found at Hides on George Street. Scottish style memorabilia is served up at The Scottish Shop, also on George Street. The New Zealand Shop next to the visitors centre is worth a look for local things.

Dunedin has intimate cocktail bars where conversations abound to rowdy pubs with live music. There is something for everyone here, if you cannot find something you like here then it would be best to stay home every night.

The Octagon is the main entertainment district with Dunedin North offering some younger pub and bar options. If you want Irish style evening you can go to Craic in the Octagon and for Scottish to the Scotia Whiskey Bar in the railway.

Pop Bar in the popular Octagon is a retro inspired cocktail bar with an intimate outdoor drinking area in a historical setting. The DJ' s play house and funk music that you cannot get away from. .

Pequeño Lounge Bar is the best kept local secret and is found down the Laneway opposite the Rialto Theatre on Moray Place in the outer Octagon. Here you can expect to find people looking for Spanish inspired cocktails in a super chic setting.

Ra Bar is a bar and a café that transforms into a party location at night. Come here for Happy Hour and listen to what every DJ’s they on that night.

Tonic is the place to go for grabbing a few boutique beers and European imports. You can find this just south of the Octagon.

So that concludes my quick look at Dunedin.
