Places to stop for a meal or snack:-
As it’s surrounded by water and farming land Dunedin has access to the freshest seafood, meat and vegetables. It is also a short distance from oyster country, on the south coast. Try bluff oysters which are best around April. Whitebait is also a favourite when it’s dipped in batter and fried pancake style. Dining is mostly casual in Dunedin with just a few fine dining options.
Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant has consistently won the NZ Beef and Lamb Hallmark of Excellence Award. The understated interior features a bright space and it serves a hearty menu of modern cuisine.
Inside the landmark railway building, Scotia showcases Dunedin’s Scottish past in the restaurant, whiskey Bar and wine Bar. You can expect to find oxtail, haggis, gravlax, ham hock, venison and beef.
Plato has a waterfront setting so you might expect good seafood and you will not be disappointed with what’s on offer. Casual comfort is the theme with a menu that offers a large range.
If you have taken the tour then why not stay at Speight’s Ale House for the food. You can dine inside the brewery on traditional pub fare. The restaurant is just as good as the beers.
Two Chefs Bistro is an inner city location with a Parisian feel to it. Its old world charm comes from the antique mirrors and dark wood but the menu contains a wide variety of good dishes.
As this is a university town which also has an arty scene then you can rely on coffee to be flowing almost everywhere. This place is no exception with quirky cafes serving seriously good coffee. Most of the cafe society is found around the Octagon area, in the University George Street vicinity and the upmarket suburbs of St Clair, Roslyn and Highgate.
At Nova Café you will get to both people watch and get you coffee in one stop. They famous for their filling breakfasts but also have a good range of cakes, desserts, lunch and snacks. As well as high quality coffee they also have traditional and herbal teas.
At The Fix you can get yourself a roasted coffee in a wireless hotspot. All Fix coffee is freshly roasted daily by the owners and they take pride in serving you one of the best coffees around.
The Good Oil Cafe is a local hot spot and a great coffee shop. Service here is fast and friendly and they have a varied and quality menu. The breakfast, brunch and lunch are all equally good.
Nectar Espresso Bar and Cafe state that they want to bring you the best quality coffee roasted in New Zealand. I will leave you to make up your mind about that. They also make their own chutney, relish and jam.
