Deep Sea Fishing

Having enjoyed the parks many times I decided to look for something completely different for us to do on this trip. Scanning through Orlando Villas attraction tickets website, I came across deep sea fishing – now that is something different! My husband and son spend a lot of time fishing on the lake at our villa, so decided they would probably love to take to the seas to try their hand, so I decided to go ahead and book. There is a choice of full day, half day or shark fishing – I thought half day would be enough for our first adventure, but as it worked out the day we were due to go the trip was cancelled and we were given a full day trip a couple of days later.

The boat was due to leave at 8. 00 am from Port Canaveral, so we left the villa at 6. 15 am. We arrived at Port Canaveral at 7. 30. When we arrived at the dock we went into the office where we were instructed to choose our fishing rods and given the option of buying a box of big fish (better to catch the bigger fish) for $20. We agreed, even though you are given enough bait to last the day as part of the ticket cost. After some instructions from our host Ryan on how to use the fishing rods we boarded the boat and took our numbered places, and before we knew it we were setting sail. It is worth taking a remedy of sea sickness if you suffer, as some people did feel queasy!

The captain announced we would be sailing for 2 hours to reach the area we were going to fish, so we made ourselves comfortable, had some bacon and egg sandwiches and played spot the dolphin – we saw about 3 or 4 schools – wonderful!

We finally arrived at our destination, baited our rods and began. There wasn’t much ‘biting’, so the captain moved the boat to another area. There was a little more success here and could feel the fish biting, and my husband was very pleased with himself when he reeled in a small shark. Shortly after my daughter also caught a huge fish, but it managed to slip away – this was fun! ! We moved to another area, where some other guests caught a huge flounder and even an octopus.

Lunch was served – a choice of hamburger, hot dog or chicken sandwich in the inside area of the boat. The crew were very disappointed that we were not catching too much, so decided to move into shallower waters. Here I think everyone had some success, catching several fish and after an hour or so it was time to head back, and reflect on the ones that got away!

We arrived back in dock at 5pm, feeling tired, smelling of fish and agreed it was a great day out and we will do it again. Don’t forget to take some cash to tip the crew – they come round with jars after, but deserved it as they do work hard.

High factor sunscreen and a hat is a must – you will get burnt. Soft drinks are provided free all day. Hand wipes would have been useful as well.
