Ghent is a paradise for veggie lovers. Since, proportionally, Gent city has more vegetarian restaurants than say Paris or London. They call themselves the veggie capital of Europe. It may be worth staying in a local town/village as you have such an efficient transport system that offers extended hours during the July Gent Festival. Gent being one of the largest cities in Belgium has a great transport system. You have Gent St. Peters station which connects directly to Brussels centre, Brussels International airport and all main Belgian cities.
Gent has a good tram system throughout the city and needless to say a good bus network which all run at regular intervals. The city also encourages cycling with the largest cyclist area in Europe with some 400km (250 miles) of cycle paths were cars are considered as guests.
July is a great time to visit as the city is host to some big cultural events such as the Gentse Feesten, I love Techno in Flanders Expo, ' 10 Days Off' musical festival, Some 50 concerts take place in diverse locations throughout the medieval inner city and some 250 international artists perform. Other major Flemish cities hold similar events, all of which form part of the Festival of Flanders.
Be aware that accommodation is at a price and difficult to find within the city, this event attracts many thousands of tourist from all over the world and of course Belgium’s public. During the festival there is not only music but lots of restaurateurs who offer a taste of not only Belgium food but food from all over the world.
You can also stroll around the local area and buy antiques, jeweler, art and general antiquities.
Last but not least you can view, sit back and enjoy the beautiful architecture of the city as you ride along Gents inland waterways.
You can enjoy a traditional boat tour were you captain will also be your guide. During the boat tour he will gladly share his knowledge with his passengers in various languages. You can choose from various companies to discover Gent along its waterways.
The scenery is so romantic with trees and flowers overhanging the waterways, truly memorable. It a paradise for photographers, artists and romantic couples, a well worth visiting city.
