Nieuwpoort claims to have the biggest yacht port in Northern Europe, with more than 2, 000 moorings. There’s the World War One memorial statue of King Albert I as well, with a visitor centre to mark the anniversary of the start of war from October 2014. At the westfront Newpoort tells the full story of the flooding of the polder landscape during WW1.
There is a place called Seneqalese Quarter, a romantic district of holiday villas built i 1908 for the wealthy Belgian industrialists. Six years after they were finished, these Anglo-Norman style houses were occupied by French colonial troops defending the town of Newpoort. The quarter is named Senegalese after the Senegalese who stayed there.
Oostduinkerke is very famous in Belgium for its shrimps. Oostduinkerke is a city for sea lovers, watch the shrimp fishers on their horse’s and enjoy some freshly caught shrimps. It is a large natural reserve area and includes the highest dune of Belgium/33 metres. The sand beach is at low tide almost one kilometre wide and it runs all the way to the French Dunkirk. It is a perfect beach for para carting and sail wagon. From tradition, every last week in June, they organize the Shrimp Festival.
Westende/ Middelkerke a typical seaside town , a perfect destination if you are looking for nature, sea, architecture and local gastronomy. During July and August many sport instructors organize free activities like beach volley ball, fitness, beach football, and animation programs for children, skateboard and many more.
Westende also offers a Casino, where there is a terrace with fantastic panoramic view over the sea and its built in Normandic style architecture.
Knokke is another city of the Belgian coast, here you can also find lots of interesting places to visit, to eat , and spend your time by the seaside. This is a rather a fluent area which offers many high Brand names shops, a great variety of restaurants and terraces to enjoy a local Belgium beer on a summer day.
Property is rather expensive in the area of Knokke, many business people buy apartments to escape the city and relax by the sea. In Knokke you can find places like The Freedom museum, where a realistic way to depict the difficult period of WWII.
Another museum in the area is Sincfala with about 2000 years of Zwin region history, the impoldering, the flourishing Zwin ports, the Eighty years war, tourism and harsh life of fishermen and their families.
Knokke is the Zwin, a wonderful nature reserve at the Belgian coast, a unique biotope for birds and plants. Every year many thousands of birds come to Zwin to look out for food.
The Belgium coast is well worth visiting, you find many Belgium’s, especially with young families spend their holidays in the region.
