When our friends first mentioned Beaches and Cream and how very popular it was I had no idea what they were talking about. They explained it was a very small restaurant with a limited food menu but specialising in desserts and malts. I am still not sure what the latter is but they seem very like milkshakes.
Beaches and Cream is located near the Yacht or Beach Club resorts near Stormalong Bay the main swimming pool. It is open daily from 11am to 11pm and apparently if you are the first party of the day you will be escorted into the restaurant while everyone else waits outside. The lights are dimmed and flashing beacons come on while all the servers greet you loudly and you are shown to a booth, complete with a tablecloth and cloth serviettes. Apparently people start arriving early at the restaurant in the hope they will be first in line.
If you only want sundaes, cones, malts, shakes and cokes there is a walk-up window for take-out orders however food items are only available in the restaurant.
Beaches and Cream is very popular and also very small so you may wait anything between thirty minutes and an hour at busy times. While you wait you will be given a pager with limited range however it is next to an arcade so it is easy to entertain the children.
Once you get inside you will realise how small it is there are only three booths, seven small tables, and a counter with seats for ten. It is decorated in pastel pinks and blues and the floor is covered in old-fashioned tiles while there are mirrors and artwork on the walls.
The kitchen is behind the counter and you can see everything being prepared. We thought sitting at the counter was fascinating as you could watch the chefs at work. There is also a jukebox on which we heard “Jailhouse Rock, ” and “Earth Angel. ”
The food menu is limited, but very good. On our last visit our party opted for burgers onion rings and a turkey sandwich and we all really enjoyed our meals.
The “malts” looked really good they were topped with real whipped cream and a cherry, and I saw a chocolate malt dusted with chocolate shavings and a vanilla malt sprinkled with white chocolate.
Beaches and Cream is famous for its desserts so we could not leave without trying their “Kitchen Sink” This was made up with eight scoops of ice cream, all the toppings, and a can of whipped cream, needless to say we could not finish it!
Beaches and Cream well worth a visit.
