Amsterdam: An overview - Part 2

Exploring Amsterdam is something I never tire of, the characteristic canals surrounded by narrow, low and crooked 17th-century houses. Central Amsterdam is possibly one of the best kept cities in Europe, which is as it should be for a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a rich cultural life and a wide range of entertainment but Amsterdam is a city which has managed to retain a more intimate feel. It’s a real treat for art-lovers as it is home to over 50 museums, many of them famous around the world. The major must see places include the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. If you have already been to Amsterdam many times before then go a little further afield to the greater metropolitan area. You will find it offers a lot of variety and some surprising and unusual attractions.

Amsterdam’s unique architecture is best viewed from a sightseeing boat on the canals. There are many tours which allow you to discover a side of Amsterdam you might never see on your own. I would say that a canal cruise is an absolute must for every first time visitor and it’s a great way to understand the layout of the central area. However Amsterdam is also a great city to explore by bike or foot. It’s very easy to sign up for a group tour or excursion or just wander around with a map and discover Amsterdam on your own. Everyone will have a favourite way of exploring so just go with whatever suits you but remember the Amsterdam City Card is a really good way to see everything the city has to offer.

Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world. Many people think that locals are born here already on bikes, and other than China I don’t think you will ever see so many bikes in a large city. The many bike paths in the city make it very easy to get around. You can find the city’s gems on your own or join part of a guided bike tour. If you want travel outside the city then you can experience the typical landscape of windmills, dikes and endless fields of flowers or green pasture. Sif you go as far as the coast you can wander through quaint fishing villages or along the dunes.

Amsterdam & Region Day Ticket is a special 24 hour public transport pass valid on all metros, trams and buses operated by the companies GVB, Connexxion, Arriva and EBS with a cost €15. The greater Amsterdam area also offers a lot and this ticket lets you explore the beaches of Zandvoort, Edam' s cheese market, the Aalsmeer Flower auction as well as traditional villages like Volendam and Zaanse Schans. The ticket also comes with a public transport guide for the Amsterdam region which is filled with useful tips and sightseeing ideas.

Finally on the subject of tickets you should visit the Last Minute Ticket Shop at Leidseplein 26.
This shop sells tickets to events in Amsterdam for just 50% of the regular price. A large selection of tickets for concerts, theatres and other events is available every day of the week.
