Moeders
This is a restaurant with a difference as you will realise the moment you take your seat at the table.
The tables are set with all kinds of different glassware, cutlery and crockery. The walls are filled with hundreds of framed and unframed pictures along with antique pans, plates and biscuit tins. Moeders, which is Dutch for mothers is known for its traditional Dutch food. They have also served their famous Dutch Ricedish for over 25 years. This is a combination of all the typical Dutch specialties on one plate. If you do not want to enjoy this then there are plenty of other things that you can choose from on the extensive menu. Moeders is known for its informal atmosphere and friendly service as well as for several other Dutch specialities such as hachée, suddervlees and stamppot. There is also an international menu available and all of this is at Rozengracht 251.
The IJ-kantine
This building was built in 1957 by the shipbuilders of the NDSM as an office building and later it was used as a cafeteria for the NDSM shipyard. In the 80s the NDSM shipyard went bankrupt and the buildings were all put to other uses. The current IJ-Kantine is more than just a canteen on the IJ. It is a striking and transparent brasserie with a wonderful terrace that is right on the NDSM harbour. It has just about everything you could want all day long. In the morning you can go there for coffee, during the day you can have lunch, in the evening after a meal you can enjoy a drink next to the fireplace in the lounge. You can enjoy some of their specials such as wild sea bass and potato cannelloni at MT. Ondinaweg 15-17
Fifteen
Fifteen Amsterdam is a restaurant that uses the same concept of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen in London. If you do not know, what happens is that every year he takes fifteen young under privileged people and trains them to become chefs. This has been set up in a former warehouse so it is large and serves over 200 people with Mediterranean styles dishes. I have mixed feelings about this one as I found it a little noisy. Our meal was OK but friends who went later were disappointed with the quality. I will let you make up your own minds if you go to Jollemanhof 9
