Afternoon Tea at the Peabody

I am always on the look out for some gentle activities when I am staying in Orlando these days. I love the parks but the rides no longer appeal as much as they once did. I have always enjoyed visiting the resorts on the monorail system at Disney and so, on this last visit, I decided to check out The Peabody on International Drive.

Everyone recognises the hotel because of the Duck on the tower but how many have actually investigated the ducks inside? I did and I had a really pleasant afternoon which I can highly recommend.

“From Monday through Friday, Afternoon Tea at The Peabody Orlando is an elegant tradition, a serene oasis where the infusion of tea leaves from China, Sri Lanka and India both relax and refresh the body and spirit.

With all the graciousness of an English country manor house, the traditional Afternoon Tea accompaniments are brought to the table impeccably served. There are cucumber, smoked salmon, egg salad, and seafood salad sandwiches, oven-warm scones, clotted cream, strawberry preserves and miniature pastries, served on bone china with gleaming silverware and crisp linens. “

I ordered my tea around 3-30pm and it was delicious and plentiful. While having my tea I was able to watch the Peabody Ducks as they swam in the fountain and the waitress told me the Legend of the ducks. It all involved a hunting trip, rather too much whisky and a joke between the general manager of the Peabody hotel and his hunting companion. They put 3 live decoy ducks into the fountain in the hotel lobby and to this day there are always 5 ducks in the lobby of the Peabody hotels.
1 male and 4 female.

After my delicious tea, I stayed to watch the March of the Ducks and it was such a cute ceremony. The thing that amazed me was the fact that the ducks only react to their own music and do not leave the fountain until they hear it.

They Duckmaster unrolled a very long red carpet which they walked down and into the lift before going up to their quarters for the night. I went up in the adjacent lift along with some other families who had gathered to watch and when they got to their own floor they waddled very enthusiastically into their upper floor fountain to settle for the night.

During this particular afternoon the temps outside had soared into the 90’s. I was cool fed and watered just like the ducks and $15 lighter for the tea…… but worth every penny.
