    Just wondering.................

Hope this does not seem to daft a question.
Why is it when Brits go on holiday they automatically look for things that remind them of home? I can see the point of xpats that are living in Florida looking for the little things that they might miss. But for the rest of us that are only going for 2 or 3 weeks...why do we need to find places that sell an english breakfast or a scottish pub or brit newspapers? Does anyone know if this is a brit thing or do the German,French and Mexicans do the same thing?

    Don.

I think it is a Brit thing. I am originally from India and never used to look for things to remind me of home when on holiday. But since coming to the UK, I tend to look for things like Brit type newspapers, supermarkets, bits and pieces around the house etc. The True-Brits that I know seem to be a lot more like that and often try to re-create a 'home-away-from-home' atmosphere. But Orlando is already quite 'Brit Friendly' and is probably not the best place to notice this phenomenon.

I have a lot of German friends and they seem to adjust very quickly to the local situation and go along with the tide. Some of them visited India for the first time a few years ago and I was surprised how well they adapted to the (quite rugged) local conditions. As for the French, I guess they will be happy as long as everyone speaks French......

I confess to searching for internet access or newspapers whilst away, but purely to feed my football addiction.. (I miss 3 games during my Aug/Sept visit..!!)
You don't often see German bier kellars or French cafe/bar's outside of their respective countries, but the English/Scots/Irish pubs and 'all day breakfast' haunts wouldn'nt exist if they were not profitable.. (maybe they are full of Germans/French and Mexicans who can't afford London prices..!!)

There are German restuarants and drinking establishments in Orlando to, they like their sausage and saurkraut!! So they probably are like us. We avoid Brit type establishments when we go on holiday, but glad the gargage at our community sells HP brown sauce!!!! Hubby does look for the fotball sometimnes but only if big matches, EC/WC etc. If you can't get a paper, see the match....get on the www!

The one thing that any Brit would never miss would be the good old weather back home![msnsmile2]

I'm more than happy to do without the British way of life/newspapers/food/weather/depression etc.for a couple of weeks at a time. The "English" shops/pubs/fish and chips in the US. seem very contrived and plastic and expensive. I know that within a fortnight I'm going to leave the American way of life behind so I make the most of it while I can 'til next time. (Ten weeks and counting!!).

I am also more than happy to do without the Brit way of life while away so are the rest of the family I think my youngest has more American phrases to her vocab than British anyway Disney TV on constantly in our house with the Toon version on more oft than not
I dont look for papers and would never go to a Brit pub or restauraunt I bet if all those that do actually thought about it they would probably admit that at home if they went for a meal it would probably more often than not be Indian ar Chinese that they went to[msnwink]

I would not look for anything English, other than a newspaper. I do like to know whats going on in England so that I can fully appreciate not being there.[msnwink]
