I was wondering had any members from Ireland or the uk brought their dogs on holidays to florida with them. Is this a good idea or would the travelling be too much for my little pooch (A 1yr old Cavalier)[xx(] Also if anyone would have info on good airlines who carry dogs (preferably as carry-on luggage)

All dogs and cats have to travel as cargo and the airlines won't transport them in the summer months at all (I think it's May - September). It costs an awful lot of money for your pet to travel and the only people I know who've done this are those immigrating into the USA.

It's your choice of course but I think it's much kinder to leave your pet at home in a reputable kennels facility or with a friend looking after it that it knows than to drag it on a 9 hour return flight to Florida and have to keep it inside all the time because of the heat that it won't be acclimatised to.

To the best of my knowledge all pets have to go in the hold. You would have to get your dog a pet passport with the expense that entails, and you would be risking your dog getting several exotic diseases that we don't get in the UK. You would even have to visit a vet in florida to get tick and tapeworm treatment administered before you could come home. My advice would be to leave your dog at home and then you can all get a holiday. It would not be much fun for your dog in Florida unless you intend to avoid the theme parks as you would just have to kennel your dog in Florida to all go out together.

Don't forget that when you are in FLorida as well if you are visiting parks you wont be able to take the dog in thereso it will mean days in kennels. I dont know many (if any villa owners who will allow dogs in their homes because so many other guests have allergies) so your dog is going to be more confinedagain. So as Blott says all in all for the time you will be away it will be much kinder (it is also expensive to make sure your pet is eligible for the pet passport in order of vacination, microchip etc - just for a holiday)

I know what you mean! I have a black lab (rejected from being a guide dog for the blind on health reasons)
I'd love to take her with me but she'd want to spend all her days in the pool!
As owners we would always look at each case individually. Have had several guests come down from North USA for three months & accept that they couldnt leave pets for so long - we even had a parrot stay recently! (outside!!)
I can sympathise on the allergy front too as a long term sufferer. We always make sure that owners accept responsibility for a thorough clean of the home.
I have to say though that I think your dog would be happier at home - do you not know anyone who'd be willing to have her/him? Im lucky; there's a waiting list for mine!!
And when you get back they'll be so pleased to see you!

Personally and PLEASE do not take this the wrong way I think it would be madness to bring a dog over for a holiday.

I thought it was cruella speciality taking all the puppies.......

On a serious not I would not recommend it for any one to take the pet just for an holiday. I thought the new dog passports only worked for the EC, has this changed?
