Visiting towns and cities outside the orlando area

we would like to visit a few places out of the orlando area away from the hustle and bustle of Disney. Can anybody suggest any good places perhaps with a few coffee bars/shops where we can chill for a few hours and watch American life go by. [msncool]

You could try Mount Dora which has lots of antique type shops and also tea places. Or, further afield, St Augustine is an interesting place to visit (set off early and get back late). As already mentioned, the coast (either side is interesting although the Gulf side has warmer water!). Kissimmee Old Town (not the one with the bungee jump thingy, the one under the archway further along to St Cloud) has some interesting shops as well as a lake front park as well as a few eating places. Sanford is quite an interesting shopping place with some tea shops. Orlando city also has a lake front park. Is that enough suggestions yet?

I agree that Mount Dora is very good for 'watching the American World go by' though not typical. Closer and even better is WINTER PARK, where there are excellent gardens, shops, galleries, restaurants and a scenic boat trip.

Old Town on a Saturday evening is unmissable. Plan to arrive at about 4pm and stay till close to midnight.

On our recent visit we went to Winter Gardens, and quite enjoyed it.
Not what we expected to see - nice parks, small market on a Saturday morning, and the scenic boat ride. Plenty of places to sit and watch the world go by - although it wasn't really that busy for people watching.

    St Augustine
It's America's oldest city. Definately worth a day trip.
    Jacksonville
It's America's largest city. In my view Florida's best kept secret.
    Coco Beach
    Space stuff. Just cool!

We always spend a few days at Fort Myers Beach, very nice, water sports if you want them, a lovely stretch of beach which is great to walk along at sunset, we stay in a motel that overlooks the sea, drive into Fort Myers and there are all the shops you could want, and the chances are you will not see any English people, we met an American teacher who thought it was great to meet an English family she had never met any English people before, it then comes as a bit of a shock when you go into Wal Mart on the 192 and 95% of the shoppers are English! We are also trying Fort Lauderdale this year never been before but now like to do 1 week travelling round new places and 1 week Kissimmee
