    Drivers licence

Off to Florida in 5 weeks (and counting) - 3 years since our last visit and I can't remember if you need both sections of the UK driving licence or just the ID card part for picking up the hire car.

    Could someone please confirm!

    thanks

Quite like to know this myself as I have the old style but my hubby has the new one and we're both driving.

You need it all as the photo bit alone isn't actually a licence to drive, the paper bit is though. The photo bit does come in handy though for identification as it has your signature on it as well as your photo.

On the last 4 occassions i have only needed the Photo ID, it may be that i`m already in the computer for the rental company so they don`t ask just check ID.

I wouldn`t go without it though as you never know if they will want it, and if you didn`t bring it you are in deep............

It takes me back about 8 years to the time when i forgot my driving licience (Old type) and i was on a flydrive..........DOH
The rental company wouldn`t accept a fax or anything, had to wait 4 days for family to post it over to me, never going to forget it again.

I can confirm that you definitely need both bits. I had the card in my wallet and proferred it at the desk. The Dollar man insisted on seeing the paper bit as well and I had to open my hand baggage to reach it. There was no problem afterwards, of course.

FHP would want to see both bits if you were caught doing anything dodgy as well.

I always take both parts anyway, but have found that I've never been asked for the paper part
and most of the rental desks seem quite happy with the photo card as they can get most of the info they need from that. But I know that you do need to take all parts with you.

You will certainly need both parts if you are stopped by the police.

got the new licence for first time for holiday last oct

didnt really think about taking the paper part

rented cars at orlando and charleston sc with hertz

none of them asked for the paper part for renting the cars luckily

someone run into the back of me at charleston sc, the police were ok with just the plastic photo

a couple of months ago tried renting a van from local hire company in uk they do require the paper part

having said all this i think i would take it.
is there any reason that you dont want to?
