Five years ago (not knowing about fire ants) I found some in a towel left on the grass in the villa we were renting. Thinking they were just like the ants in the UK I beat them out of the towel with my hands and got several bites. It stung for a few hours and then itched like mad. Still, after that experience, I have never been bitten since. I have been told it is only serious enough to warrant hospital treatment if you are one of the very small number of people who are allergic to these ants. So I suppose the best advice is buy one of the products mentioned above and avoid grass areas with bare feet.
