    Vitamin BI as insect repellent!!!!!!!

A friends daughter is off to work for Camp America for the summer, as she is working with kids they do not allow employees to bring along any spray on, or cream repellents for safety issues. They have all new recruits take Vit B1 for a month prior to going ,this is then in the body and gives off an odour only detectable to insects which they hate and so leave you alone!!!
Anyone heard of this before? must work as they have been doing this for years apparently.
    Worth knowing?[]

Not heard of it before but would like to know if this is for real. I smell of insect repellant from May to Oct here in upstate NY and go through bottles of the stuff

Looking forward to hopefully someone in the know to confirm this

Loads of people swear by it. Not sure how much scientific evidence there is but as long as you don't take too much there is no harm. There is no need to take it for a month though - it is a water soluble vitamin so gets flushed out of the body quite quickly - a couple of weeks would be fine.

I found a couple of links:

A friend of mine swears by wearing a sheet of 'bounce' conditioner in her bra as mosquitoes evidently hate the smell.
Also Avon 'Oh so soft' cream is just as effective.
I can't confirm any of this as I have not tried either remedies!

I have heard that eating Marmite helps ward off biting insects (probably because it contains a lot of B vitamins). Hubby says he'd rather be bitten than eat the stuff but me and the kids love it so I think i'll pack a jar next time we go.

You're right Tony. The Avon skin so soft oil is great for keeping beasties at bay, and of course, for keeping your skin nice and soft ....[msnsmile2]
