We have a new baby sand hill crane currently being introduced to us by his parents and he looks teenage size. He pretends to be really brave and wanders off by himself and suddenly realises his parents aren't near and rushes back to them. I went to go out of the net screen door to get the hose for the pool and all three of them 'rushed' me as they thought I had food for them but feeding them is illegal. He has a white head crown (rather than his parents' red ones) but a red beak. Unfortunately, his legs are much longer than his neck and body combined so when he tries to peck at the grass to eat, he practically does a 'beak' stand!

We were also watching a large bird (sorry, couldn't tell you what it was but it looked like an eagle - no binoculars!) yesterday swooping and doing mini dives over the rear lake. Eventually he went for it but missed his fish but he was soon back again and this time managed to get quite a large one which he carried off triumphantly in his talons.

Today we've spotted our usual anhinga diving and sitting on the edge of the rear lake with his wings held out to dry off before flying off again.

This year we seem to have loads of geckos darting around in the front garden (yard) going about their business.

I've been over twice this year so far, and haven't seen a green tree frog. Do they have a season or are they usually year round or do they prefer to come out at certain times of the day?

Or, is it just that my glasses need cleaning and/or strengthening??

My current guests phoned me to tell me that they have taken some lovely pictures of a 6' alligator sunning itself on the grass at the bottom of my garden. Some people get all the luck!! I've only seen them swimming. I knew I should have charged more rental - it's better than Gatorland.

But Blott, they deserve a special mention. They've even got a ball team named after them.

Mmm, ours had a fish lunch today! He got quite excited and nearly leapt completely out of the lake in excitement...

Tree frogs - OK is this the red eyed variety? If so, there's a pile of info about them here http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ki...203/frogs.html and it seems they're nocturnal.

That explains why I didn't see any this time then!!! Wasn't looking out for them at night.

We have the crane family in our garden also - We have given them all nick names - Frazier Niles etc and a lovely Otter, tortoises etc - the best is the bald eagle - he swoops over the lake at least twice a day and flies off with fish my husband has tried to catch :0 I think it because of the surrounding conservation - no Gators now though.
