    its just not florida

myself and my family have just spent a rather damp bank holiday at bristol zoo and although most were lighthearted we were constantly passing comments like its just not animal kingdom or when do the fireworks start. does anyone else feel like the uk is letting itself down, especially when you have just come back from the sunshine state. are there any members who have actually moved to florida, not to retire but to start a new life, and how did you find it.

You can't compare the UK with Florida. We don't have the weather to make the "year round" kind of Floridian entertainment possible, in the UK. Plus we don't have the number of visitors or right kind of tourists to make the huge financial investment worthwhile. Just some of the reasons why we stood no chance of getting EuroDisney or Universal Europe (one went to Paris and the other to Spain).

Our country is great, and I would hate for it to be anything like Florida. I love Florida too and go there because it is so different from home and because I like to get a dose of "very hot weather" on a regular basis.

I enjoy the differences, and certainly don't feel that we let ourselves down. Why would we want to be like somewhere or someone else? We already have so much that is our own and is wonderful in it's own right.

    Hi Phil,
How on earth did you get an avatar of my mother in law?

I know what you mean about "it's just not Florida" The first time we went about six years ago
I saw someone with a T-shirt which said "After Florida Everywhere Else Is Just A Beach"
How true that is. I 've just been into Newcastle town centre today - Spring Bank Holiday, loads of people milling about with nowhere to go . Half the shops closed and nowhere to eat, we had a sandwich and just came home. Now Florida would be buzzin' I bet even though it's
Memorial day theres plenty of places to go and eat!

    Regards Kevin T.

We plan to move on a more permanent basis when our house is ready but you do get negative vibes on here about life is not all you think it is etc etc. Think I will take the chance!

i understand what carla said about not having the weather, thats something we cant change, but we are our own worst enemy. how many of us have come back from florida where everything is spotless only to land at gatwick head for the rest rooms and find the floor covered in urine, no toilet paper, and wash basins that need sterilising. and its not just the airport which has a huge turn around of tourists in and out, but check out the amenities at most restraunts, pubs, cinemas etc and tell me if any are as clean and in such a good state of repair as any in florida. and lets be honest they have a much bigger turn around of visitors than anywhere here. my point is we just dont help ourselves in the little things....and its the little things that make all the difference.[msnscared]

I always feel that UK is probably the best country in the world to live in, except for the often poor and unrelable weather. Since the weather is in the lap of the Gods, I don't think 'UK is letting itself down on anything'. Places like Florida may be great to go as a tourist, but unless various things fall into place actually living there permanently would be a dufferent matter altogether. I love Florida and generally like to visit the United States, but cannot imagine living there permanently - certainly not practice medicine.

We've just returned from a lovely afternoon at Beeston Castle - had a nice picnic on the lawns followed by a walk up to the castle itself with it's fantastic views over the Cheshire plain. By the time we got down a medeival re-enactment group were just starting a show explaining all about medieval weapons and battles together with showing you various types of swordfighting etc etc.

The weather was faultless, the place was clean and well organised and the show was great too. There is nothing wrong with the UK at all - we enjoy Florida for the same reasons as Carla - it's so different - but would not swap the UK for anything.
