And when it got past the Bristol Channel he put his foot down and boy what en experience
that was when the after burner thingies were turned on

After burners = supersonic = little nudge in the small of your back = 1420 mph = Mach 2!!

    God I miss that thrill!!

And boy did it climb fast,

When we were on there the captain said we would feel a little tug when he turned them on, and
we did, The one that got us was just after take off he said he had to throttle back for noise
and we would feel the plane sink. GEE it did

Wasn't that more for noise abatement though Julie. It would still follow a great circle track no matter where the entry point to the North Atlantic is.

Concorde used to fly at 60,000 ft and did not fly north as most US bound flights do, on leaving London we fly directly west over the Bristol Channel.

Had an engine surge once at Mach 2 which is when the engine intake doors flaps shut and the engine stops, normally two go at once, which is wot happened - went we finally leveled out and restarted the 2 engines having dived 30,000 ft I found a friend of mine downing a bottle of Vodka in the front galley and using lots of 4 lettered words!!!!!!

Yes I know it did some days but not every day - or at least not according to anything I've ever read about it. As far as I recall it was very much dependant on weather etc etc. If there was a very strong headwind then I would imagine it would be a lot less likely.

I'm sure I am probably over-simplifying it above but I don't want to get drawn into a techinical discussion of the aircraft as that would take the thread off-topic.

We used to fly non stop to Washington with a full load on Concorde - it could not get to Miami though hence the Fuel stop in Washington.

Absolutely John -but it was extremely rare - I flew on that aircraft twice a week for 8 years.

    Anyway back to topic eh!

Draw a line on the great circle map above between the UK and Barbados and you will see why.

Why then when I flew to Barbados did we go from A -B and not over Iceland, Greenland and down the east Coadt. After all the West Indies is inly a few hundred miles down from the keys.
