You need 6 months valid on the passport, but just in case you plan to go again after Oct 2004 why not get them renewed now and add on the 9 months which they allow and then you have only lost 3 months.

    Does that make sence?

You shouldn't have any problems. If you go the the passport office site at www.passportoffice.gov.uk it gives you the current and future situation regarding passports and visa waiver entry to the USA.

No panic there at all. A valid 6 months from when you return is fine. Hope they enjoy themselves. I'm sure they will have a fantastic time.

I just renewed my 3 children's passports via the post office and got them returned within 2 weeks. If you are going at the end of May then renew them now, if you are going at the beginning of May the renew them when you return but in any case before October. The only problem you would have now would be if they are on one of their parents'
passport instead of having their own.

Perry you will be fine, the passports only have to be valid for the duration of your stay and NOT 6 months as is commonly believed.Renew them in September prior to the change to passport/visa rules and you wont lose anything from there validity as the passport office will add up to 9 months to the 5 year period.
