"They have taken you photograph at Gatwick and Heathrow for a couple of years now"

Weve travelled from both of these airports about 6 times in the last 2 years and so far not had our picture taken, we're going next week so we'll see if it's changed , but last tiem we went from Gatwick in Oct and never had photo done.

I've been in and out of both Gatwick and Heathrow about half a dozen times in the past 2 years but only on domestic flights/from Newcastle for work purposes.

They don't use a camera with a flash or anything, it is like a webcam/digicam and your picture is displayed on computer when you pass through to board.

That's probably the difference then, it may be for internal flights but not used so far for Transatlantic.
If they are taking your photo, I believe, they have to inform you, in the same way as you have to be told if a telephone conversation may be recorded, (I guess it's to do with the laws of privacy). Even where there are CCtv security cameras you are supposed to be informed that they are present although not necessarily exact location.

Just thought of another reason why it would make sense for them to take your picture on internal flights as when you checkin in you have would not necessarily have to have a passport (although from what I've seen more and more airlines are insisting on photo id) so this way they have a check that the person boarding is the same person.

I think you are correct, as i was told it was to make sure the person who checked in and passed through security was the same person who actually boarded the plane.

At the moment it is only for internal flights Steph. They do tell you that they are going to take your photo mainly because you have to stand in the right place!!!
