We have tri-band phones and they work in Florida - just have to make sure you have contacted your service provider and switched on your International Roaming and don't use them tooooo much unless your wallet is feeling very fat

I use my tri-band when i go orlando and as Caroline says make sure you contact your service provided and they will explain how to activate you phone for internation roaming - Also if you have started a new contract with a provider then some will ask for £250 upfront to set up international roaming, so the best thing to do is ring your provider[msnsmile2]

    Mark,
Does buying a phone card in the States not involve monthly subscriptions?

A phone card is for use with any (landline) phone so that you pre-pay for the phone call and just dial a code and then the telephone number.

You can get pay as you go mobile (cell) phones from Tracfone or Virgin but these can't be used in the UK.

Roaming is expensive. Careful use of text messages is the most cost effective way of using your phone whilst abroad.

Just remember that depending on you service provider it can cost upto £1 per minute just to receive a call!!! [msnoo]

Be careful with texting in the US we found last year that sometimes the texts took hours or even days to arrive!
Fine if it's not urgent but about as much use as a chocolate teapot when it's urgent.
