    Why do you say renew it before they come in?

    Because if you get stuck with a new passport that starts after October 2004 and before the biometric requirements are able to be met, you would need to apply for a B2 visitors' visa under current regulations.

    and getting the B2 visitors' visa means a visit to the American Embassy in London I believe

    I thought the reason the US have just brought in this finger print and picture thing was in response to other 'friendly' govt's pressure about people having to get visa's.
