Can confirm ours is chipped and has been fine
Although not the PS2, Microsoft have done things to discourage X-Box chipping by having software on their X-Box Live service that recognises and bans chipped machines.
PS2 doesn't have that sort of on-line service at the moment, but they're going to roll one out when they release the PSX later this year, so if you have a chipped one and fancy on-line gaming, beware as they may include the same kind of detection.

I have recently got a ps2 and the people in the shops advise you not to get your ps/2 chipped for it may break the console however the english games dont work unless chipped. I am jeffs son jack...
