I would say upgrade now as im sure it would be cheaper than doing it when you get
    there.

As for size, We have 2 kids and also take my mum, but we always opt for a 7 seater mini van
for all the extra room inside. also means the kids can sit apart when they are tired and

I would upgrade here less hassle.

We normally get a 7 seater mini van and there is 3 of us.

If you've paid for an all-inclusive car rental (ie with insurance, taxes, etc) then upgrading when you get to the car rental desk will mean that you'll have to pay the additional insurances, etc separately as well as the upgrade price.

If you upgrade in the UK, then these will be included within your price.

The other benefit of upgrading in the UK is that you can ensure that the type of vehicle you choose will be available whereas it might not be on the day you arrive.

No - the 7 seater are like Espace / Voyager size. They have very little space for luggage.
We normally get an 8 seat minivan for 6 (3 adults, 3 kids)of us, and still have to rely on friends to take some luggage!

Have you thought of getting 2 cars in case the MIL wants to do something without you (or vice versa!!)

I would have thought they were slightly bigger than the 7 seater ???
Others who have rented one should be able to let you know for sure

As for driving them (7 Seater myself) its great, you are high up and have room and I felt really safe
    very pleasant experience

Our 8 seater from Dollar was an Astravan-after that they jump to a 12 and then a 15 seater dodge Ram, which I didn't like at all.
