    Hurricane season

Not sure if this question should be asked but just out of interest, with hurricane Irma closing in on Florida and Harvey causing so much damage and devastation in Texas, do villa owners have procedures that they put into place if, god forbid, this sort of situation happens ?

Hope everyone stays safe over there over the next few days.

We used to have a folder with information in about what to do in the case of a hurricane, advise about staying away from the windows and sleeping in an internal room.....downstairs if your home has two storeys, putting mattresses against the windows etc etc. We also had a hurricane box with wind up torches, a wind up radio, first aid kit and bottled water.
Fortunately in all the time we were villa owners, none ofitwasever needed.
Our MC used to keep guests up to speed with what was happening and used to advise putting the pool furniture in the garage.......for those houses that had no room in the garage he used to put it in the pool!

we picked up a free hurricane guide a while back, and have it our info folder in the house.

We make a point of phoning our guests to make sure they are aware of what's happening and take preparations.

We also have a folder in the villa with all sorts of info including hurricane advise/prep and also details of shelters etc.

Our MC emailed last night with an update on the advice they are giving to all guests and reassured owners that they were helping any guests that need help with moving pool furniture etc and also said they would visit all empty villas on Friday to move furniture indoors etc.

Our management also have a detailed page or two in our villa information file covering what to do if a hurricane is forecast.

If anyone is out there over the weekend, please follow instructions and stay safe.

The latest path, http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...048.shtml?cone, is looking a little on the rough side for Central Florida.

We were in Lake Davenport when Irma stuck, we were told by all and sundry to either stock up, and if you sit it out make sure to stay in the smallest room in the house with no windows, e.g the toilet, or to evacuate, as the hurricane approached and it seemed to take different direction every time you tuned into the latest weather, we also spoke with the locals who said this was the big one, some of them were not to sure what to do either. In the end we moved out and into Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the-hills. Originally I had booked one night with a view to play golf the next day. I rang the resort and book another night, in the end because of curfews and disruption we stayed at Mission Inn for 4 nights. BTW Mission Inn was sold out with locals, what great people we met there, one couple without us knowing paid for our meal because they felt sorry for us because we had visited their country and had this happen to us, that made feel very humble On our return to the Villa in Lake Davenport we found that the power was still off and indeed was off for five days in total. The other problem was that food was scarce at Supermarkets, luckily we filled up with fuel, because there was a problem getting fuel after the storm. Opposite our villa a tree had smash into the roof, trees were down everywhere, but our villa had minor damage. In the end we were fine and enjoyed the rest of the holiday. One thing for sure is that we will return, but not in hurricane season.

The week following Irma we actually cancelled a Gulf Coast trip we had paid for and will think very hard before booking a stay during the hurricane season in the future. While our accommodation was actually still available to us, we felt that the overall situation would have meant making quite a few compromises which aren't what holidays are about in my book.

We also discovered that in most cases travel insurance is very limited when it comes to situations of this type so we lost a lot of money.

As Hurricane season runs from 1-Jun to 30-Nov and then the Sno-birds kick in Dec-Apr it will limit you somewhat if you do take that decision.

We have been many times in hurricane season over the years and never had more than a windy, rainy day. The chances of being there for a serious storm are very low if you are only there for a couple of weeks. This has been a bad year, may be a one off or the sign of things to come - global warming, but it would need another couple of years like this one to put me off the whole season.
