Second time we have been affected as well. A few years ago we were evacuated from Captiva - thanks to this site we found a villa in Orlando for a few days rather than go to a hotel or an evacuation centre. With Irma, this time round our outbound flight was delayed for four days. Fortunately we were heading to Orlando this time and the villa owner was good enough to extend our stay to make up for the lost days.

I have to say, when we arrived, there was little sign of any real problem where we were (I know there were many, many problems elsewhere). There were some trees, fences and roofing down, but otherwise, apart from a few restaurants closed, we were pretty much unaffected.

The biggest problem was with the airline bookings, understandably. We had to rearrange our flights about four times, but whilst it was a nuisance and frustrating, each change was made with minimal fuss and the airline (Virgin),was really very helpful, I couldn’t fault them. The car hire was a little bit trickier, but Roger and his team were great as usual. We were on the first flight into MCO after it reopened and the staff at Dollar were great - they just switched the timings with no extra charge when we got to the counter. They did try to sell us a toll pass for $100, which would have been useless as the tolls were shut and didn’t reopen until well into our second week, but we were aware of that and declined the offer.
