internal flights

hi

i am new to this site and to florida. I first visited in January this year by taking a group of 48 travel and tourism students, we only has five days there but managed to pack a lot in and the trip was a great success, hopefully they wil all promote florida from now on. i enjoyed it so much i am planning to take my husband and 5 year old daughter sometime during 2005, unfortunately stuck to school holidays, but have read lots of good information and tips already on this topic on this site.

What i would really like advice on is a side trip during our visit. I am a huge Elvis fan and could not allow myself to tread on US soil again without a visit to Gracelands even if for only a day or one overnight (dare not take any longer as my husband is not a huge fan)

Can anyone give me advice

John (one of the site owners) was going to take a day trip to (LA) I think to see Kiss.

If you email floridadreamvilla he may be able to tell you how he went about booking the flight.

I'd love to see Gracelands too-so if you find out the best way to go about it -do let us know!

I went KLM/Northwest Norwich to Orlando via Amsterdam with Memphis as the hub. Got delayed and ended up at an Elvis Bar near Gracelands. Apart from Elvis everywhere you go is great soul music such as Al Green. in the bars. Well worth a stop over to break the trip.

We live near Rochester in New York state and have found the cheapest internal flights on our travels tend to be with Air Tran and Jetblue. Jetblue is NY based so don't think that would help.

I suggest you look at expedia.com to put in to and from airports and then it will list the airlines for the deals - you can then go into their individual websites to see if you can get a better deal.

Have to say I don't find internal flights particularly cheap over here (came over from UK a year or so ago)

That KLM routing from Manchester actually to Orlando via Amsterdam and Memphis was the routing my son was taking at Xmas and was camcelled at short notice and Airline-Network had to put him on £900 British Aiways direct flight as it was the only replcement they could find. If Memphis was to be part of your holiday, something like that would be catastrophic for you.

I booked direct with America West on their website as that was the best rates I could find anywhere. Via Phoenix, AZ to Fresno, CA [msnsmile]

On my trip to Orlando in Oct 03 I flew into Atlanta with Delta. Normally I would get a connecting flight to Orlando and pick up my rental car. But I have been trying to get to see Graceland for literally 30 years and for some reason just never seem to get there. Rather than get my usual connecting flight to Orlando I connected for Memphis and collected my rental car. If you are an Elvis fan then then no words can describe the experience. I thought it was incredible. I found a Days Inn motel opposite Graceland. Yes Elvis is everywhere but what I especially liked was that in the mornings before Graceland opens for tours. You can walk through the gates of Graceland and visit Elvis's grave. When I was there I was the only one walking up the driveway to the side of the house where the graves are and it felt strange to be strolling up the driveway of Elvis's house unescorted or watched. I spoke to security at the gate and asked why the walls around the house were so low (even I could effortlessly climb over them) and why there are so few security compared to most celebrity homes. He told me thats the way Elvis wanted it when he was alive and thats the way it is kept, and yes people jump the wall all the time and take souvenirs but then they always have. For Elvis fans the complete tours are a must. Walked around Memphis and have got to say it is a lovely city, so much so I have got to go back and see it again. Drove from Memphis to Orlando, it took two days and 840 miles. I could have flown but I just had to see what travelling through five states would be like (also stopped in Tupelo where Elvis was born). I should have flown because the five states looked just like each other. But it was a great trip and one that is nice to look back on.

thanks everyone for your help, i was going to look at KLM, but was unsure of the journey for my 5 year old, it sounds like there are regular problems with this, so wil have a re think. Special thanks to bond, it sounds fabulous, i bet you had a great time i am quite envious. It has made me even more determined to get there.
