    Key West Express

We are planning a trip to Key West next March and originally thought we would drive, but having done it before we remember what a long drive it is!
It is spring break in the US and the flights are quite expensive so wondering about the Key West Express from Fort Myers, has anybody done this, if so any advise?

    Hi Liz,
We have had the pleasure of the Key west express trip about 4 times.
We live in Sarasota so will drive down on the morning of the trip, It leaves early so maybe think about staying pretty close.
You can just go for the day, Its along day.Or get an open ticket. Its easy to book somewhere in Key west for a couple of nights.
Remember if its season book ahead and it could get expensive.
The boat will drop you off near down town, Taxis are waiting if you need one.
You can rent golf carts, Mopeds or push bikes.
The crossing can be as smooth as glass, You get to see turtles and dolphins on a good day.
It can also get pretty choppy!
Key West has a lot to offer, Great places to eat from high end to very casual,
Lots of bars with live music.
If you go have a great trip.

    David.

Thanks David, we have been to Key West before but it's a few years ago now. We have already booked accommodation so just trying to decide how to travel!

Never heard of this boat before - sounds like a good 3/4 night trip from the villa. When is the best time of year (calm sea/ wildlife etc) to try it ?

We have been looking to do this for a couple of years but havent had chance as we decided it would need to be a couple of days at least as we would stop in ft myers the night before because it leaves at something like 8 in the morning.

It leaves Fort Myers 8.30 and leaves Key West 6pm, the trip is 3.5 hours so you really need a stopover in a Fort Myers both ways unless you are happy to arrive back in Orlando very late. We have booked 3 nights in Key West so it would be a 5 night trip, we are not too worried as our trip to the villa is almost 5 weeks but the rest of the party are only there for 2 weeks and don't know if they will want to loose such a big chunk of their time on this side trip.

that's why we havent done i yet and at Christmas are only at our place for 2 weeks before flying up to Boston for Christmas and have some work planned on the house so it will be next year at least before we do it. we both like boats so he boat ride is part of it for us but as youu say the early start and late finish mean extra days in ft. myers as well.

This is very close to Rotonda West and some of our past guests have taken advantage and stayed in the keys for a couple of nights then returned. We were going to do it this trip but my family have driven from Texas and are staying so we have put it on the back burner until next trip.
