Friends went to Florida with their 2 teenagers, I could see she didn't think much of this piece of advice but she agreed later that she should have listened. She packed as normal for 2 weeks away and most items didn't get used.
Less clothes means more room in case to bring back "stuff" back.
This is also a good tip for guys. Awhile ago, I read somewhere to pack as you normally would, then take out half. Packing for a cruise once, I tried it. I chickened out and didn't take out half, but took out a good bit and found I could have gone with half. It was an interesting trial and lesson I've remembered since. I now pack much less.
