    Thanks again all.

We did consider the FS, I had an awesome week with them in Nevis earlier this year, made all the better as it was free... (I was the +1 at my brothers work thingy), but I was worried that it would be a bit too sedate for the children and too hot to be confined to just bedrooms and public space.

The comments about Vegas reminded me of our wedding trip where I discovered that my love for blackjack was only equalled by how much I sucked at it! It was so bad that I have avoided casinos at all costs since then as I am sure I could quickly develop a habit I can't afford. I do remember one night climbing into bed at about 3.30am, lying there unable to sleep for half an hour before getting back up to continue giving money to the dealer in return for some chips that he let me hold for a short while!! Fortunately my wife, who remained uninterested in gambling (and yet uncharacteristically patient with me) throughout the holiday, decided to put a few quarters she had in a machine at the airport (just to get rid of them) and won more than I had lost!

I am starting to regret our decision to avoid Yosemite (we were scared off by the reports of huge crowds in the summer) as the pictures look amazing.

If you still want to visit Yosemite, it's doable in a long day from San Francisco. That's how I did it... and it was snowing then!

So, I reckon that we could do this on "the way" from San Fran to Sacremento. It turns a 2 hour Journey into a 6 1/2 hour round trip, but it does seem such a shame not to visit Yosemite and this the only time that we are "close".

the first time we went to Yosemite was traveling from SF to Las Vegas via Mammoth Lakes and Death Valley. We did stop overnight in a motel just outside the park so we were able to spend a good half day there, about 6 hours which was long enough to hike Vernal and Nevada Falls. Once we had been we had to go back and spend longer so that we could hike more of the trails. This year will be our third trip to Yosemite and although a dodgy knee has somewhat curtailed my hiking we are looking forward to some gentle strolls and lakeside beaches.........there is a lovely beach up in the Tolumne meadows area.
if you can go to Yosemite do, you won't be disappointed.

    Ok,

So we have decided to do a train trip from San Fran to Yosemite - figure this will add a bit of difference and will be easier than driving. It will be a long day (14 hours), but I hope a good one. We will be in the park for about 6 hours. There is a company that put this together as a tour including transfers etc.

Having seen the amazing views at Sedona, we have booked one night in at the Enchantment Resort (looks awesome) and will drive up there and back from Scottsdale. Still no movement from Lynn though on driving from LV to Scottsdale so think we will be flying (Sedona was my trade off!)

I have looked into Hearst Castle, but it is just too far from where we are so will have to save that for next time.

Got to stop now, the budget was blown about 10 additions ago!!

    Route now is

    Home
San Fran - 5 nights total
    Yosemite - day only
    San Fran
    Sacramento - 3 Nights
    Lake Tahoe - 5 nights
    West Hollywood - 4 nights
Newport - 3 nights and tour some more of the coast line
Big Bear Lake - 4 nights
    Las Vegas - 3 nights
    Scottsdale - 6 nights total
    Sedona - 1 night
    Scottsdale
    Home

Thanks again for all your words of wisdom

I don't know what I was thinking recommending Hearst Castle from LA. It is of course a very long way.

Looking forward to hearing all about this amazing trip at some point.
