No personal experience - but why not contact Avis and ask directly? T & C's changed from time to time so better be safe than sorry.

Some companies do accept debit cards, so Carol's right, speak to them and they may agree.

Unfortunately, they don't usually accept prepaid credit cards, which could be another option for you, but it may be worth asking.

Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

Had a reply from AVIS below is their reply
The Orlando Intl Airport does accept debit cards with the following
    restrictions:

NOT accepted on any Cool Cars (all Group X specialty vehicles).
    minimum age 25 or older.
Debit Card hold at time of rental: estimated charges plus $200.00.
If you use a debit card at this location, we will perform a credit check
at the time of rental to determine credit worthiness. If we are unable
to complete the credit check or if the credit check fails, you should be
prepared to present a major credit card in their own name. This policy
applies to both U.S. residents and foreign visitors

Well, at least there's hope - if you have enough in your account.

I'd be interested to know how they do a credit check for a UK account though.

I'm not sure they can do a credit check at the rental desk......you might just have to get a credit card - with a small limit, just to avoid any faffing about at the desk and possibly being denied the car. The other option may be to "offer" a cash deposit. Worth a shot if you have no other choice.
