Oh, and for info, if anyone else is looking at Easter 2014, I emailed Monarch and had a prompt polite reply informing me that next year Monarch won't start flights Manchester-Sanford until May.

On a similar point to the one I made earlier on this thread, are there actually people around who are prepared to pay that sort of amount for a transatlantic economy return?

Ridiculous - it is just forcing us to use the US carriers and travel indirect.

Have you looked at Thomson? I know they are stopping flights from Manchester towards the end-November but think they are starting again around March 2014.

I hope you manage to find something affordable!

Yes, Thomson don't fly from Manchester on Saturdays, and will be using the new Boeing Dreamliner on the days they do fly. The Friday-Friday flight is currently showing at over £1300 each.

Before I retired I worked in a school, and no we didn't have the option of paying a fine for taking time off during term time, we just could not go. The prices for school holidays have always been higher but just lately seem to be ridiculously so.

Selfishly, I wish these rises were confined to school holidays but it isn't the case. I'm seeing huge rises in fares all across the board these days.

It used to be the case that fares to the US were great value compared to long haul travel to the rest of the world but it's now cheaper to fly much further away than it is is even to places as (relatively) close as New York.

Sad as it is, the way things are going people will not be able to afford it and will either stop going altogether or only go half as many times as they do now. Starting to remind me of when I was a child and only the wealthy could afford transatlantic flights.

We flew to Thailand last June for £490 with Ethiad. We normally go with Thai Airways but decided to give Ethiad a go. Absolutely spot on, great service, attendants smiley and very courteous, and even food that we found edible!! Shall definitely be using them again.
