Not international outgoing but we figure if we are phoning home then we will text and tell them to ring us as we have an international calling plan on our home phone.

Ok understand, I might get a 3day SIM as I can make use of the national calls while traveling to the relatives!

I was under the impression that it was 'normal' in the states on pay as you go tariffs to pay to receive as well as make calls. is this not correct.

It is (not sure why the Americans have put up with it for so long - it also applies to most of their contract ones) that's why they give ridiculous amounts of minutes.
I'' be testing the system in a couple of weeks so will let you know how we get on.

I checked that it was possible to receive incoming Int calls in case there was a loophole and got this reply

"Yes all Ready SIM plans would allow you to receive international, national or local call.

    Sincerely,

Yes, can choose which sim you want so you can either have unlimited talk and texts or include data (and can use "tethering" - not that that means much to me).

I just had a thouught when reviewing for Caroline that choices that it mentione Int texts but not domestic but just found this in their FAQs
Your Ready SIM includes unlimited nationwide and international SMS

i normally just buy a sim for my phone for the time I'm in the US. I don't use it much so only put a few dollars of credit on it but I was caught out on my last visit because it seemed that the provider had sold numbers to suppliers and I was receiving about 15 advertising texts a day. The effect was that each time my credit was reduced and within a couple of days had been completely spent. It had never happened before so maybe it was a one-off but I'll be checking the situation before I do it next time I'm in the US in a couple of weeks.

Might be worth bearing in mind for others.
