    Unhappy Seats

We have just booked a Virgin seat to New York and on completing the booking I wanted to pre book my seats, only to find that you can now only pre book 90 says prior to travelling, how long has this being in effect?

It seems to have been this year. It's a real pain as it used to be like that and you either have to go through the process twice for ouwbound and inbound to get best chance of seat you want or wait for return date to be bookable and hope outbound are available.

Plus be aware pre booking your seats doesn't guarantee them, it didn't for us anyway. I pre booked my outbound and return flights (90 days) last year and printed off our seats. It was o.k. on the way out but on the way back when we printed our boarding pass we had been allocated different seats. When I mentioned it at Downtown Disney booking they said it was because the plane wasn't full and they had to distribute the weight and once in flight we could sit wherever we wanted (in the correct class of course) but on boarding the plane it was almost full and someone was in our pre booked seats. I did mention it to an attendant but he just shrugged and said pre booked seats are not guaranteed.

To be honest I have never got my requested seats on any flight, short or long haul. I only pre book as they csn see its a party sitting togther, so hopefully will keep that in mind when shuffling passengers around.

We must have been lucky. The only time we haven't got our preassigned seats is when we have been upgraded, or one time when we were told as has been said it was to distribute the weight. we were initially assigned seats with seats in front and behind but just behind the exit row. (we like the back row with none behind if poss. ) For take off the exit row was going to be empty so they asked hubby and I to sit in them for take off, which we did. Of course as soon as seat belt sign went off he went back to the row behind and had those 3 seats and I kept the 3 exit row seats (so no complaints from us either way). Of course odds are we will sooner or later not get the ones we've prebooked.

I always had a problem when I flew Virgin and that's the main reason I don't use them now. Otherwise, the only time I don't get the seat I've selected is when the aircraft type changes at the last minute.

Seat selection is increasingly seen as a revenue stream by airlines these days so I would expect to see the situation get worse for those who aren't prepared to pay.

Never had a problem. Always got the pre-booked seats but now having to wait 90 days before we fly now and hope that this is not the start of problems.

We are usually lucky with Virgin. Our daughter is Autistic, with server earning difficulties and gets air sick, so we usually get bulkhead seats unless there are lots of babies on board. We do find the seats are more reliable on the way out, but as she sleeps on the night flight home that is not so important.

With reference to my post above, this was the first time we have flown Virgin for about fifteen years (then you could reserve your seats at the time of booking) and was the first time we were unable to have our pre booked seats, never a problem with other airlines. It's not a big problem but why have a pre book system if it's not effective.
