I've always got my pre-allocated seats no problem - and have flown with a range of airlines including virgin.
We are flying to Orlando from Manchester in August and we tried to pre book the seats when we booked the flights and were also disappointed that they can't be booked till 90 days before - we will have to try in May
Last year they were refurbishing the planes and they withdrew the facility. I imagine like other airlines they will amend the system again and if you want a specific seat then you'll have to pay to pre-book.
With British Airways you can only choose your seat 24 hours before, any earlier and you have to pay. Still not guaranteed that you will get that particular seat either.
Never had a problem , we go in May , same dates as last year , pre-book seats
the plane we came home on was half empty so once up in the air, asked if we could moved to the empty seats , no problem at all
and had a row each
