    Hi Colin,
If you have time I would Take stops as you drive down and may be stay an odd night as you go.
Key Largo the fist key has John pennekamp state park a great place to snorkel.
Half way is the key of Marathon,You can go swimming with the dolphins here and maybe stay at Hawks harbour resort on Duck key.
Key West is about another 2 hour drive, Accommodation can be expensive so do you research.
Tons of things to do. rent Bikes, Scooters, electric golf carts to drive around.
Duval street is the shopping and bars, Sloppy joes, Hard rock, Irish Kevins, Jimmy buffets,
Mallory square is a must for sunset local entertainers line the dock while the sun goes down.
We did the parrot head bike tour with a guide, a 5 mile easy bike ride around Key west very interesting you pass Ernest Hemmingways house and see his 5 toed cats, 0 mile marker, Southern most point in the USA and more.
    Have a great trip. David.

If you are stopping off along the route and want to spend a couple of hours somewhere we visited the State Park on Windley Key (near Key Largo) and you can see some fascinating corals in the rocks. There is also some of the old railway equipment left behind from when they put the railway in down to Key West. This is only a small park but vey interesting.

Bahia Honda State Park - a great place to stop off on the journey down US1. This is where the old bridge breaks and you can walk out and get some great views and photos.

Whilst in Key West a trip to the top of the lighthouse gives you some great views.

If you want an aerial view of the sunset, take the lift to the roof terrace of the La Concha Hotel (corner of Duval and Eaton).

For some great live music, the Smoking Tuna is a must.
