If you have smart phones(iPhone) and wifi access. It would be in-expensive, as your messages will be free, and you can facetime each other.

But do not use your UK phones to call each other. I know on an O2 contract, I pay to receive calls at around £.92 a minute and I am charged to make a call at £1.42 a minute, so if you are both on O2 it will cost you a small fortune, as you automatically pay for the first minute regardless, and you are paying from the time the phone call is started, regardless of the call being answered. So if you decide to not pick up the call, or you miss it, you are still getting charged.

If you don't have the option of wifi all the time, and want to contact each other outside of the internet catchment. Buying two PAYG phones in Walmart would be a best bet, as it is very cheap to text each other, and the phone calls are a lot less, but again most networks of PAYG both parties will pay for the phonecall.

They had Pay as You Go Phones for $30 plus you then had to pay for the SIM to go in it - nothing remotely like $10, though.

They are Trac Fone and they usually have them in Wal Mart at $10 which includes 20 minutes call time doubled to 40 minutes.

They had some in Walmart at Christmas at $9.99 as I nearly bought one for a friend who was over for New Year. They were in the Walmart (think it was the Cagans Crossing one) they had more of them in the entrance part where they have the Disney ticket place in the left as you go in.
