Items stolen from checked baggage.

The locks that US security have access to are rubbish in my view, they get opened and just lost in the system.

We have used them for years and had no problems. We had all of our cases opened on one occasion, and only knew because of the note left inside. Our newest case has a US approved lock built in that the zip tags just click into so there is nothing to get lost.

Report to the carrier, there maybe a ring at Manchester as there used to be at LHR, formerly known as Thiefthrow many years ago.

As said, if it is valuable, it is advisable not to be in the checked baggage.

Curiously, we checked 6 bags and all but one were searched by the TSA. The stolen unit was in the one which wasn't searched.

Probably too busy hiding the sat nav unit to have time to put a notice in or expect you to be dum enough not to work out that they have 'more than searched the case'. Really does seem as though someone via US airways is 'not very careful' about packing everything back in a case after 'searching' it!

It is TSA staff who search the bags not the airlines.

We flew with Us Airways last year, my bag was obviously searched but no note left. I had foolishly packed my eyedrops for glaucoma in my checked luggage with other meds and prescription. Eyedrops were not repacked into my bag leaving me without and having to pay a fortune to be prescribed and purchase a replacement (english prescription not adaquate). On my return journey more items went missing from the same suitcase but they were only insignificant items and not expensive just annoying to arrive home without them.

I can't find some costume jewellry I bought in FLorida to wear with something last week in Boston and hadnt got anything to match with it. , I assumed I had left it on the bed but havent got round to asking cleaners if they found it, making me wonder now if it did "fall out" or get taken because the bag I was almost certain I had packed it into was searched on way as they left note. It was in a small claires accesorries bag and was only $15 of necklace and earrings so no huge deal but if it was taken and happens on a regular basis makes you even more wary.
We always pack electorinics in hand luggage. Mind you I know someone who had their laptop stolen at security however when we went out 3 weeks ago a laptopn and iphone were in one of the bins (having gone through screening) and one of the inspector was calling out for 10 mins or so before we left and still no one had claimed it. No doubt if they didnt go back or it went missing later they would assume it had been stolen.

I have returned to something I used to do when I first started travelling in the 70's and did all thought the 80's and 90's.
I write down everything I pack into the suitcases. Not as individual items as such 4 blk T/S, 8 knickers.
It does not take long and does give peace of mind and done due lessons learned in the early days.

I never pack anything in the way of medicines, valuables as already said and remove store price labels from clothes.

Lessons learned from the old days and if your suitcase does go astray at least you know exactly what was in it.

I have been known to photograph before packing what is going itno case so if it gets lost then you know what to claim for.

I'm wondering now - in 2010 I bought a lovely leather wallet that I distinctly remember packing in my case when leaving the villa and it was never seen again. It was still in it's box with the tissue wrapped around it etc.
Rather naively I assumed I had mislaid it when unpacking, but two years on it still hasn't turned up.
We also flew US Airways to Manchester. I see a pattern emerging.

Even though we never put any valuables in them, each time we flew one of our cases would be opened and the TSA lock never replaced. We started using coloured cable ties a few years ago and since then have never had our cases opened. I also remember seeing a video clip showing how a thief can insert a pencil into the zip of a case, force the zip apart and remove a small item. The locks can then be used to slide along the zip and back to close the teeth. The owner is then unaware that their case has been tampered with until they reach home.
