Hi Donny, You'll obviously need some cash for small purchases, tolls & etc....
We used to take Travellers Cheques, but found some places reluctant to take them, especially larger denominations & needing all sorts of ID ....
Nowadays, we use credit cards, have found the exchange rate very favorable in relation to any other method of payment & accepted pretty much anywhere...

with the travel cards once you have loaded\your dollars there is no extra charge for purchases as you are effectively paying cash.

I guess its personal preference but we always take cash with a credit card/s as back up. The house has a safe so the cash stays there till needed along with the passports.

We always use our credit and debit cards which are commission free for overseas use and always keep hold of odd bits of change for when we first arrive and before we have had a chance to get to an ATM. If the rate is particularly good before we leave we have been known to draw additional funds in case the rate has gone down next time we visit.

We always take cash with the credit card back up as well, we find it works really well for us as we have to stick within a budget whilst we are away.

You can get a card now that you can load with dollars as and when the rate is favourable.

How do you determine what is 'favourable'?(as opposed to acceptable to yourself) The best brains in the City, with access to every scrap of financial information, simply do not know which way the rate will move. They gamble and so do we!

Most of us use 'plastic'(debit and credit cards) in High Street UK - so why not in High Street USA? Far better exchange rate than cash or TC's.

I will just add that we mostly use credit cards for general stuff but any high value items (lets face it things are often cheaper in the usa) cash is king. I have just been pricing up a new camera body best cc price is $3900, best cash price is $3100! That is an incredible saving. So if you are buying anything specific do some home work first. Us brits cn be a bit lax in pushing for a deal but at the moment deals are to be had.
