Places to stop off at from Atlanta to Florida

I am driving from New York to Florida with my husband and two boys who will be 9 & 12.

We have most of the trip planned but are not quite sure where to visit after we see our family in Atlanta, Georgia.

We know where we want to visit in Florida itself, but are not sure which route to take because this will depend on what we see on the way. All I will say is that we would like to visit Daytona Beach so wherever we go would have to be enroute from Atlanta to Daytona.

Can anyone suggest any places to visit to help us decide where to stop off. Anything with a bit of history or amusement park, interesting museums, etc.

Any help would be gratefully received.

    Thanks Nadine

As the straight forward route is via the US1 my choice of place to stop would be St Augustine as this will not take you out of your way and afterwards you can follow the coast road down to Daytona. St Augustine is 'the nation's oldest city' and has a very interesting and checkered past. There are lots of things to see and do for all ages including a very nice beach. We found they also have some fabulous home made ice cream parlours.

WE often drive from Atlanta down into Orlando as we have family living in Birmingham Alabama. Not a very interesting route unless you hit the coast down from Savavannah, Jacksonville, St.Augustine then down to Daytonna then you would pass the Kennedy Space Centre if anyone interested. All these are interesting places and in USA terms quite old historic towns.

We've stopped off at St Augustine and Savannah, and stayed in Atlanta for a couple of days as well as the BA flight from London gets in quite late - well once you've cleared immigration, got your luggage and car it certainly is! One time we stayed in Macon and visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which was interesting but we didn't find much else to look at while there. You could easily spend a couple of days in Savannah, it's a beautiful city with lots to see. If you like a scenic route you can tootle (and tootle is all you can do as it is a slow road) down the A1A to Daytona.
