Good point Dave, when we 'left' america we flew PE, about a week after I booked The Queen Mary was booking at half the price of what I paid for flights. That was from New York and the trip is 6 days.

Dave, how did you get a one way air ticket outbound? I thought we had to purchase round trip to have a return date to comply with Immigration requirements.
Having just flown economy with Virgin for the first time in a few years, we have decided that we won't be doing it again. It will be PE at least or we will use another airline with a stop. It's worth the extra.

You would probably have to produce your cruise itinerary showing your return date.
I would love to do one of the relocation cruises, shopping would be even sweeter, with no weight restrictions, wonderful.
Martin is correct we are flying out on a one way and returning on a cruise.
You do not need a return flight just the ability to convince the immigration people that you do not plan to stay.
We have done this before and not been asked for anything. We have also done the reverse by arriving in the U.S. by ship and departing some time later by plane.

Sounds like a great idea, but how are you organising the flights? Whenever I have looked at 1 way flights they are usually a lot more money than the cost of a return flight (have no idea why!) Is there a way of doing a one way flight for half the price of a return to make this work?
Hi Fraser
The reason why one-way flights appear to be so expensive is that most of us are used to heavily discounted return fares with minimum stay requirements (usually a Saturday night). By definition, a one-way can't have a minimum stay so the fares are always in the highest categories.
I find that using Frequent Flyer miles for one-ways is the best method because the mileage required is always half that for a return (I would imagine you have more that a few of those!). By coincidence, only yesterday I booked 2 Business class 1-way awards from Tokyo to Singapore next week. Only 30k miles instead of a fare of £5,600.
Incidentally, there are much higher tax and supplement add-ons on a UK-US flight that the other way around. Sometimes that can literally be 100 times more.

We found that out when booking our sons flights when they were at US universities. The UK to US flight was far higher than US to UK. What annoyed us more than anything with Virgin was they do NOT give students a discount flying UK to US, but with an International Student Discount card they were able to get a discount on the same Virgin flight from US to UK which gave us an additional saving on top.
Works out about £150 an hour for all four, and presumably two are children.
Frankly I am amazed that so many people think it is worth that amount of money.
However we have had this discussion several times - each to his own!
At what price do people think it is not worth the extra? i.e. the cut-off point
